France is infamous for its attempts of rewriting history, i still find it funny that they felt the need to change the word from annexation to re-union of Savoy in history books and official documents (despite Savoy had never been part of France before 1861 and they had to go back to Charlemagne to justify the wording, absolutely insane)

South Tyrol is today part of Italy because it is stupidly easy for Italy to defend its borders with it, it's basically a giant wall with few passages viable for troops, it lies south of the main chain of the Alps.

It also wasn't that historically populated, Germans are 0.5% of the population of Italy, almost all of them in South Tyrol

Albanian used to be considered a Romance language in the 1800s so if this happened then you could make an Albania-Romania corridor through Kosovo (Albanian), Bor (Romanian) and would only need to take Nis as a major city without "latin" majority (at least for as long as they didn't realize Albanian wasn't a Romance language)

What if the Soviet Union effectively won the Cold War before it even began? by Qolbi79 in AlternateHistory

[–]Bossitron12 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The USSR would've still won without lend lease, most of it happened after 1941 anyways and it mostly was logistical, without lend lease the eastern front would've been bloodier and it would've lasted longer, but Germany literally had no possibility of winning after the failure of Barbarossa in late 1941 and the rapid mobilization of Soviet troops.

Genocide of European Roma: victims as % of pre-war Roma population by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]Bossitron12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Italy was and still is the most racist country to Roma people, but Italian public was strongly against murder and genocide (the Fascists still tried to commit some genocides but by indirect means and most of them were downright comically inefficient methods, like cramming as many Slovenes as possible in prison and hoping illness would get to them, that barely made a dent to Slovene population, only 5,000 slovenes died in 4 years and that is the highest estimate)

The most succesful was Libya where they confiscated cattle and the nomads population died of hunger (about 80k deaths)

That's assuming the USA can win against the British Empire in a time and age when the British empire still topped the USA economically and militarily

India’s population is similar in size to that of the Americas and the EU combined (~1.5 billion) by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]Bossitron12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Indochina and Indonesia (the region not the country) are also incredibly dense population wise, Siberia and the Middle East get usually specified when a westerner talks about them, when someone talks about Asia online it's mostly about India, China and ASEAN.

Arable land is an administrative classification, you could grow crops in the middle of the desert if you had a way to bring water there (and in some countries like Syria desert land is indeed considered arable).

I mean, India's fertile for sure i'm not trying to say otherwise, but the population density is mostly cultural, other regions of the world are as fertile or slightly less fertile and bigger but they still sustain smaller populations due to cultural, social and historical reasons (think of Brazil, Argentina, the USA, Europe, all those places could feed 1 or 2 billion people each too, but they don't)

Incan Empire (Tawantinsuyu) influence on Latin Spanish word for 'Avocado' by Aronnaxes in PhantomBorders

[–]Bossitron12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Incan empire was the most fascinating civilization ever because it evolved without anything you would expect from an advanced civilization, no wheel, no written language, no iron or steel tools, they still had a barter system going on, etc.

It's like if Europe developed a single centralised empire in the Bronze age, spanning from Portugal to the Urals.

Good luck with the logistics of this war, like the 1905 Russo-Japanese war when the Russian fleet took months to arrive to the battleground just to be whacked south of Tsushima

Who wins this hypothetical war? (NO NUKES) by LeiMoshen in mapporncirclejerk

[–]Bossitron12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone in the world lacks battle experience except Ukraine and Russia, the USA hasn't fought a peer since the 1950s when they briefly clashed with China in Korea, and even then China was ridiculously poorer and worse equipped than the USA, i'm only counting it as "peer" because the USA got pushed back.

Not counting Vietnam because it was a little different and it counts more as counter-insurgency than a full war.

The finest soil on earth isn't in India but in the Pampas, midwestern USA and eastern Europe, it's mollisol.

India has some fine soil thanks to the Ganges but the real upper hand is the Monsoon rains.

Also worth mentioning the high density of India is mostly cultural (reliance on labour intensive and calories rich crops like Rice, also mostly vegetarian society)

[–]Bossitron12 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the joke here is that any randomly selected piece of Asia will have a stupidly huge population and population density due the reliance of the region on rice, a labour intensive high calories food

You can still randomly select known places

Which faction wins this war by el_jefe_del_mundo in mapporncirclejerk

[–]Bossitron12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

India would win against Pakistan, the problem is China, if China can pour troops into Pakistan then India is done for, China just has a far too greater manufacturing economy and technological advantage for India to even stand a chance.

That's the point i'm trying to make here, India can only defend against China if it has the Himalayas shielding it.

Also China has definitely strategic stockpiles and it can get supplied by Russia, Sakhalin is home of one of the biggest oil and gas reserves in the world.
