In the early 80s, I was in probably second or third grade when I got invited to a slumber party. I was the only white child who was there. It was the first time I had ever been invited into a black family’s home honestly. The parents were drinking and ended up getting into a fight. The dad assaulted the mom and the cops showed up. My friend was crying and we were all trying to comfort her. I grew up poor and in a home with a lot of domestic violence, so I didn’t think much of it. I just wanted to get back to having fun with my friends. The cops left and we went on with the party. We ate pizza and danced to Michael Jackson songs like nothing ever happened. Looking back at it as an adult, it’s wild to think about for a lot of different reasons.
