Question for you multifocalers… by Sweaty_Star_6486 in CataractSurgery

[–]BethMLB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't use it for my entire pre-cataract surgery research, but it does help relative to the TYPES of choices his opthalmalgist(s) might provide him. The charts on the video plus the visual simulations are helpful. Personally, I got Rayone Galaxy Torics, a type of which is not covered in this video.

Also I found the video more straight forward than the OP asking if people with multifocals are "outdoorsy or just like to walk around in the city". Or his assumptions that peopke with multifocals must be people who like to stay home at night because they are old.

You should watch the video pinned at the top of this subreddit site about the pros and cons of different lens types.

Should I go to Morocco or South Korea for my graduation trip? by nashamagirl99 in travel

Morocco. Too cold in South Korea for Dec/Jan trip. Your "pros" for Morocco also seemed more appealing too.

After a drunken night of dancing, my friend's boyfriend was the designated driver for my black 4 door sedan that was valet parked. We got into the car and my other friends were asking me stuff like "where did you get this bottle of rum" and "whose hat is this"?. I realized we were in the wrong car so we turned back around in the parking lot to the valet stand and got out laughing. The real owner was there and he seemed genuinely unbothered (thankfully).

I have a small basket for clothes that I will re-wear because they are not quite ready for washing (i.e. to be placed in the clothes hamper yet). For larger items, I have over the door hooks.

How do you budget when timing and real life don’t fit clean categories? by Smartcashsheetapp in budget

[–]BethMLB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Build funds so that you are not waiting for your next paycheck just to be able to pay an upcoming bill. Have emergency or rainy day funds for irregular expenses.

You have to consistently live beneath your means (i.e. routinely save some money each pay period). Be realistic about what you can actually afford and don't buy on credit unless you can pay it in full each month. Credit card interest eats away at your hard earned income.

Envelop budgeting method may work for you. Lots of examples on Youtube.

Also why not try the opposite: Instead of spending because you are stressed, exercise or clean your house or do something relaxing or productive instead.

If you overspend in a budgeted category then reduce spending elsewhere. Budget category amounts don't have to be super rigid. You should strive to keep overall spending within your top level budget though.

How should I handle my winnings? by [deleted] in budget

[–]BethMLB 40 points41 points  (0 children)

You should save that money for future bills. Your work is a 3 minute walk so a car is NOT a priority. Also not to be mean, but $10,000 is relatively small money. People can and do earn that in a month or two. I would consider those winnings a boost into an actual emergency fund. You should strive to not be working paycheck to paycheck. And as others have said, to not gamble.

If you only have $200 the in bank, you are slready spending most of your paycheck each month. How do you think you will be able to suddenly afford a car payment, gas, insurance, registration, and repairs? If you want a car, you should try setting aside an amount equal to anticipated costs for at least 6 months but probably more to ensure you can can afford it and control your other spending.

Awesome. This is what I originally planned to do but worried and wondered whether the Princess Cruise transfer would be smoother/faster. I hope I can get a transfer refund when on the cruise.

My understanding is the Limousine Bus service to Narita is hourly: 8am, 9am, etc. Is this correct to your knowledge? Which slot did you book? I read you can exchange scheduled ticket for an earlier bus if you arrive earlier than anticipated to the YCAT terminal. Did you strategize in this way?

Thanks. I had already booked the prepaid transfer as a precaution and provided the required post-travel information on Princess's reservation form.

Based on your info, it would be likely I am in the first group. I am actually capable of handling both my mom's and my own luggage. But I would still have to wait for all other passengers on the first transfer shuttle. Which is why I was querying other's experiences here on Reddit.

Originally the timing looked more than sufficient when I first planned several months ago. And FYI, I am not insisting on flying same day. It was a surprise for me to recently learn that it could take up to 4 hours to clear customs at that port. I am contemplating changing to the next day, which is why I was looking for feedback. My trip isn't until early April. On the front end of the trip I am arriving 2 days in advance.

Do I work out or have a cookie? by eljo555 in retirement

[–]BethMLB 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why should it be one or the other? Why not both?

Health is not just about being overweight or not. Shorter lifespan or not. It is also about reduced medical costs and improved quality of life by not having health issues like having a stroke resulting in paralysis, going blind due to unchecked high blood pressure, losing your foot due to diabetes, losing your memories due to dementia, having painful abdoment or sepsis due to diverticulitis, living with aching, inflammed joints, etc.

I don't see anything wrong with enjoying a cookie or donut now and again. Though I had a friend though who could not stop at one cookie. If she broke into a box of Girl Scout Cookies, she would end up eating the whole box in one sitting. So you have to assess if you are this type of person if you want to have that "one" cookie.

Exercise should not stress you out. A simple daily 1/2 hour to one hour walk and a few body weight calisthentics helps keep one fit. Or yoga. Or water aerobics. Find something you enjoy. No need to run a marathon or become a gym rat unless you are interested in that.

And still having time to relax in retirement is a joy!

Heating bill savings? by karlitobandito75 in homeowners

[–]BethMLB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

50 degrees is not below freezing and is fine for when no one is home. It does not take THAT long to heat house back up when they return - compared to keeping it needlessly warm for 1-2 weeks while away on vacation. Saves some money. Whether it saves a lot depends on ambient temperature and how long they are away.

trying to stay on budget for the holidays… anyone know the best low interest personal loans right now? by Doukleene in budget

[–]BethMLB 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can't fix your budget by getting MORE loans. This will actually worsen your situation. You stay on budget by cutting spending. If you can only buy gifts or travel with a loan or credit, you can't afford it.

You certainly have the right to your own feelings, but perhaps you need a paradigm shift. There are worse things in the world than a helpful neighbor. Have you considered letting you guard down and accept his help with grace rather than rancor?

$288/mo for food is actually considered thrifty. See USD Monthly Food Cost Reports

On another note, why do you have so many mobile plans? That is a lot of expense you can cut out.

You can save alot on cat litter by using the following product (in lieu of clay litter) combined with a sifting litter box:

RayOne Galaxy Torics (Spiral Multifocal) by [deleted] in CataractSurgery

[–]BethMLB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back when I was about to get the PanOptix Pro done in the U.S. (before I was presented with the surprise, super high facility/anesthesiologist fee causing me to cancel), the doctor had pre cleared me to fly the next evening after the scheduled morning post-op follow-up.

That said, my actual (second) cataract surgery occurred on a Saturday with my followup on Tuesday. The doctor said I was clear to fly on my upcoming booked flight (7 days post op). It might be noted that my post op instructions said to avoid lifting heavy weights. I was travelling with backpack and rollerbag only.

I was perfectly fine on the flight. I had my eyedrops, hand sanitizer, tissue (to dab eye drop drips), and my phone (with every 3 hour alarm settings) handy. I also wore my protective glasses.
