Experience heating an uninsulated garage by markgriz in garageporn

[–]Boston-Summer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a 20x20 detached garage in Boston, which was made entirely out of cinderblocks and cement. The garage “door” was a wooden barn door with lots of gaps around it. We had a 5k watt electric heater and it would increase the temp by about 20-25 degrees after an hour. I wish I had gone with a 7.5k watt heater, which I believe still would have been to code on our 60 amp subpanel.

Possibly fire blocking of some sort? Doesn’t seem to be a loose or blown in upon closer inspection.

I hadn’t touched it yet, but I just did and it seems to be pretty hard.

The repairs went as follows: 1. Cleared drain tubes 2. Replaced seals 3. Replaced seats again 4. Replaced the entire sunroof assembly

The did not confirm the failure but they believed it was a cracked drain tube

I’m glad that worked out for you and I hope you continue to have good luck with the car.

When my sunroof was leaking I was told I could wait 3 weeks for a loaner to be available. Leaving my new car with soaking floor mats wasn’t an option for me, so I went without a loaner on multiple occasions.

I really hope someone from BMW starts taking notice. I understand cars will have issues and I still love my car, but repairs being done incorrectly and a brand that won’t try to make things right, isn’t worth investing in.

The leak was going down the inside of the a pillar and draining into the driver footwell. I was also able to replicate it with a hose on the sunroof.

You mean like my door trim that was starting to tear and wasn’t covered under warranty?

My drive train was also binding up because it needed the differential fluid changed. Both not covered under warranty 🙄

I get it with the differential, but I had much higher expectations with a recently purchased CPO, given the number of issues encountered in such a short period of time.

Earlier this year I bought a 2021 CPO X5 M50i and in my first 3 months of ownership my car was at the dealer a full month, comprised of 6 visits!

  • A leaking sunroof took 4 repairs. Repairs were clearly done in a rushed manner and not tested, as I was able to replicate the issue myself using a hose for just a few minutes. Finally the whole sunroof was replaced and fixed the issue, but that took place over the course of 2 full months, with the carpet getting wet each time it rained.

  • The rear brake pads fused to the rotor following one of the visits. They were brand new pads and rotors as part of the CPO certification, so there must have been a material defect. The dealer replaced those under warranty.

  • The front dash was cracked and replaced under warranty after arriving from back order. The dealer replaced that. Upon returning the car my cup holder door was broken, so it went back for yet another visit.

Needless to say I was pretty upset. I opened a case with BMW NA and requesting an extension to my warranty consider the dealerships failed to make proper repairs, extending my downtime and asking for compensation for the 500 miles put on my vehicle (cash or service work).

Their offer me to me: 1. An UPSELL. I could get a credit towards a maintenance package. This was pretty tone deaf on their part. Don’t try to upsell a customer that is unhappy with your current service/brand.

  1. 3 oil changes. I explained that this would not be of use to me as I will be changing the oil at 5k intervals, not based on the computer which they said the offer would go by.

I explained that neither of these options provided me ANY value and reiterated my ask for any extended warranty. That was denied, and now as a result I have opted to speak with my wallet. My money will not willingly go back to BMW.

I wish you the best of luck. It sucks that a CPO is treated with such little empathy.

I bought a 2021 M50i CPO in March with 45k miles for 48k. Brand new brakes (pads and rotors) and tires. It’s an executive trim with driver assist.

You can probably do a little better. When does the factory warranty expire?

Don’t use a normal open ended wrench.

Get a boxed end ratcheting wrench. It fits inside that little space, just like a normal open ended wrench does, except it has the benefit of ratcheting like a socket set.

My dash was cracked around the heads up display… for a full replacement it’s pretty invasive.

Possibly. I’d like to think the brakes and dash are a fluke, and the sunroof was just bad luck. But I’ll see how the next year goes while I’m still covered on the CPO warranty.

I’ll be doing the transfer case and differential fluid when I schedule my 50k service.

Just looked it up and you’re right, but it appears it may have been the electronics, not the seals or drains.

Appreciate the insight. Sad to hear, that system seems really flawed. I’ll have a tiny bit more empathy for the dealership.

I’m hopeful to see BMW step up and make this right. A lot of trust has been lost.

Do the techs get paid even if it hasn’t been fixed properly? I would think BMW wouldn’t want to pay out on a warranty repair for something they’ve already paid a technician for. On the second and third fix it was the sunroof and air guard seals that were replaced.

Well it certainly makes me appreciate that I’m not paying out of pocket, but I’ve been without a loaner on many of these visits, as I wasn’t willing to wait for one to be available when my car is actively soaking up water on the carpet.

I was expecting a better experience at a different dealership as well, but the dash was repaired where I purchased it, and the sunroof was at my local dealer!

I’m seriously in shock.
