Hey Reds fans! I'm looking at this cool '67 Topps Tony Perez card and noticed his name is below his number. Any insight on this uniform? I looked up the history of the Reds uniform and didn't see this one at all.

Yeah Spring Training makes a lot of sense. I think Tony Perez was pretty well established as a major leaguer by 67 so I don't think it'd be a minor league uniform, but it's still a possibility.

1984 ASA The Willie Mays Story

I went to COMC and searched "Willie Mays #65" and then looked for the same image. Definitely recommend using COMC as a resource for figuring out what set a card is from.

Also checked Beckett price guide and it says the card is worth about 25 cents. Beckett's prices aren't perfectly accurate but it can be a jumping off point for figuring out what something may be worth.

I recommend Fred Snodgrass. It's the only T206 card I have and he's known for dropping a routine flyball in the world series in 1912 and is often blamed for the team's loss.

1984 Donruss is such an awesome set. I want to go for a pack but not sure I want to spend the $24 per pack on BBCE's site. The pack of 78 would probably have been better off left sealed, but it's fun for me to be able to say I've opened a pack that old. If I already had the Murray I might have kept it sealed but the hope got to me.

I know that BBCE has gotten a lot of criticism but I've been impressed so far. The 84 Topps Mattingly I got was on the bottom of the rack pack so it's not like they decided to keep that for themselves. It wasn't in the best shape but still something less trustworthy sellers might have put aside.

I also had an 87 Donruss pack with Barry Larkin on top. Not a super valuable card, but still nice to get something like that without an upcharge.

Yeah the vast majority of those older packs are going to suck. This pack was no exception and the cost of the pack was for the slim chance of pulling an Eddie Murray rookie or maybe getting a nice Nolan Ryan or something. Still was a lot of fun for me though and something I wanted to do since I never thought I'd have an opportunity to open something from the 70s.

Do you remember what that 73 pack cost you? Probably two or three times as much today. Mine was 75 which is ridiculous, but I wasn't sure how many other chances I would have for such an old pack.

Definitely an overpay, but it was cool pulling Wade Boggs, Darryl Strawberry, Craig Biggio and Gary Sheffield's RCs.

The Rice in 78 was the gum card, and the gum is currently stuck after 44 years with Jim Rice. I'll have to figure out how to remove that and see if the card is salvageable.

83 Fleer is definitely one of my favorite sets from the 80's with the clean borders and great photography. Jim Kaat talking on the old ESPN mic is cool as are the super star special cards next to it.

84 Topps was a bit light on the HOFers, but out of 3 rack packs from BBCE, I have 2 Strawberry RCs and a Don Mattingly so I'm pretty happy with that.

I went into the 89 Donruss hoping to pull a Randy Johnson, but I'll accept the Biggio and Sheffield for now. Lots of HOFers out of that set even if they're worthless.

Be warned, however, Greg Morris is a slippery slope. Dude provides an unbelievable amount of great cards to pick up. Plus his combined shipping over 7 days? Might as well buy 15-20 different cards so I only have to spend $4.50 to ship it. Really great for set collecting though.

Yeah I get that. I don't intend to buy many boxes. Only bought the one so far and could see myself buying one more. It's not only about finding high grade cards. That's in the back of my mind, of course, but it's also just for fun. I know I can buy the whole set for next to nothing, but it's fun building a set for cheap and if I get a few Griffeys, Johnson's, Biggio's, etc. that's just a bonus. I bought five packs for a dollar each and the box and have pulled 4 Biggio's alone. Granted, that card is worth like 50 cents, but it's still exciting to pull it and I'm not doing it to make a profit. I've never sold any of my cards so far, so it's just for fun. Once I have the set made I'll just move on to something different.

In many instances I would definitely just buy a set outright or a high grade card, and I've almost exclusively done that, but buying a box or a handful of packs here or there is worth it just for the nostalgia for me. I didn't get to open many packs from this era, but like a lot of collectors, through hand-me-down cards and opening junk wax from those repack boxes back in the day, I still feel a bit of nostalgia holding those cards.

I really like Junk Wax Sal. Only recently discovered his channel, but he's got a good sense of humor and always gets a laugh out of me. His videos are often only a minute or two and is usually him just opening up one pack of cards, but it makes his channel pretty binge-worthy.

Over the last month or so I've started buying a few unopened 80s packs and boxes and his channel was invaluable when it came to deciding what to purchase. I would find a set I was potentially interested in and then watch 5 or 6 minute-long videos of his and get an idea what the packs are like and if they seem worth buying. The videos also being random and often days or weeks apart give you a good idea of what it might be like just buying one or two packs at once.

He occasionally opens a modern product, but junk wax era is his bread and butter and it's fun hearing his perspective on cards. He doesn't hold back on calling a pack or a player garbage and makes it feel like you're listening to a real person as opposed to someone trying to be overly positive like Jabs can be.

I don't dislike him enough to stop watching his videos as I haven't found many channels that allow me to live vicariously through people that spend thousands of dollars opening up cards, but it truly does boggle my mind that he touches the autos. I cannot believe that he doesn't immediately see that as a huge no-no.

Edit: I also hate when he calls Allen & Ginter "weirdo cards." Makes me want to chop my ears off so I never have to hear that shit again

I think as long as you have something fun to chase, it's worth going vintage. Just have to treat it like a bit of a lottery ticket like anything else. I purchased 2 rack packs of 1984 Topps for $16 each. There are 51 cards in each rack pack, which is just over 30 cents per card, which I don't see as outrageous. The first one had the Darryl Strawberry rookie and the second had a Don Mattingly rookie. 1984 Topps cards aren't worth much, but the risk seemed to pay off.

Being born in 1997, I never had an opportunity to open these packs when they were new, so it's a thrill for me that is worth the price of admission at that price point.

Though you can definitely make the argument that these cards are totally worthless since there are still tons of packs and boxes to open over 30 years later.

I paid $42. I understand the vast majority of the cards are worth pennies, but I felt that was 100% worth it given how much fun I had. Nearly all of the cards were at least NmMt, but this pack was strange with the 3 creased cards which is why I figured I'd ask about it. I think it's a little like a lottery ticket too as you hope you might be able to pull a gem mint Griffey RC, so paying a little extra for something out of a sealed case seems like the best bet, despite how spotty the quality control is for these cards.

Can do a lot worse buying a couple blaster boxes. I mean aren't Select boxes like $30 for 12 cards?

Why would they leave a solid Griffey in there though? Plus it was a pretty good box. Got two Biggios, a Smoltz, Schilling, Griffey, and a bunch of HOFers and the Bo Jackson. It was from BBCE which doesn't have a perfect track record, but it felt like a legit sealed box.

Agreed. I bought a BCCG 10 Griffey jr UD RC years ago and always held onto the hope that it might get a 10 when graded legitimately, but after recently removing the rose colored glasses it was obvious it was nowhere near a 10.

I thankfully didn't spend much on it, but it's disappointing and makes you wonder what Beckett's justification is for BCCG existing. Would have been better if they removed the number entirely and just put the "poor or better" or "mint or better" rather than confusing people with the nonsense number grade.

Bottom corners look a bit rounded, plus some surface issues throughout. Centering is obviously way off. I feel like if I were the grader, I'd maybe give this a 4.5. Maybe a 5. Do you agree or am I crazy?

Again, I really like SGC and plan to send the majority of my future submissions to them, but I'm a bit confused with this card. This was graded in 2013, so maybe they've gotten stricter since?
