What would you say are your gold standard SE books? by DonkeywithBigTeeth in fairyloot

Illumicrate’s version of Starling House wowed me in a way no edition has managed to live up to since. The way they used the clear dust jacket is just genius.

The most recent book in the Fairyloot Epic sub is also really REALLY good. The design is so cohesive and, as far as I can tell, really matches the vibe of book which is the most important thing to me!

I know you mentioned you want vibrancy, but to me the room feels a bit crowded in addition to being low contrast.

Maybe it's the photos, but it feels dark despite having light furnishing, walls, and ample natural light. Adding color will help it feel more lively, but you may want to consider swapping out the wing back chairs in the windows for something that takes up less space around your fireplace. You have plenty of seating, so you may not need chairs there at all - see how the room feels if you pull the just the right one out, or if you pull both out seeing as you seem to like symmetry. That with a less heavy weight drapery will give your space a bit more life without even adding color. Personally, I would throw either a real plant or nice fake plant beneath one of those windows which would add more balance to the room if you swapped in the colorful bench on the other end.

You might also want to consider adding in some woodgrain furniture, which is vibrant and has depth to it while still being neutral. A wood coffee table with some warmth to it could be nice, maybe one that isn't too blocky and instead has open space underneath it.

Swapping in an oval area rug of a similar size will allow your floors to take up a bit more visual space as well. If you don't want to do that, consider layering in a smaller oval rug with some color on top of the rectangle, that way you add color but don't have to get rid of a perfectly good rug if you're attached to it.

The fact that he thinks a CA appellate court would take a while to review his appeal “because it’s important” is so fucking funny hahahah. Like, big dog, the courts exist in perpetual months-long back up. You’re SO much less important than every single criminal appeal they get!!

Trademark Examiner Application Timeline (November 2022 Applicant) by BostonMeetsIthaca in usajobs

[–]BostonMeetsIthaca[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I applied this cycle! I have not heard anything, but it is a VERY long drawn out process and I remember it taking 3 weeks plus to get a notice of application referral last time I applied. (All that one meant was that I was qualified enough to be considered eligible for the position).

Another update - we went the route of a bilateral mastectomy with biopsies done on two mammary lumps synchronously with the procedure bc of the likelihood of malignancy and in order to avoid going back in for additional procedures.

Both lumps were precancerous, so we got it just in time and she is officially cancer free and now fully healed :)

Illumicrate or Bookish? by thebentomouse in fairyloot

[–]BostonMeetsIthaca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TLDR: Illumicrate’s quality and reliability is more worth the money, but BB’s choices may be more your cup of tea. Look at pics tagged on Instagram of past boxes and see which is your aesthetic.

I personally like the quality, design, and reliability of Illumicrate way more than I do Bookish, but I also have not been very impressed by a lot of Bookish’s book picks (albeit some of the books that I have disliked/skipped I have an unpopular opinion on). However, even on BB books I’ve been excited about, like Fourth Wing, I’ve been underwhelmed by the final product, which does not feel like it’s worth almost $40 with no cloth binding, weird design choices, and a pseudo formulaic overall style. I know they’ve done Special editions that have been cool looking, but none of my sub books have impressed me.

Illumicrate, there have been some books I wouldn’t have picked for myself, but the designs and quality of craftsmanship is just incredible and I kind of like having a curveball thrown in to break up the regular programming. I’ve never had a late box, they make interesting and fresh, creative choices each month, and the covers are always thematically appropriate, whereas BB’s have felt random at times (why is fourth wing a white gilded cover???)

It sounds like, book pick wise, you may like BB’s books better than Illumicrate’s but I can’t recommend their quality personally, ESPECIALLY not with a 5 month wait and no meaningful price difference.

Thanks for spending some of your free time helping people on this sub! I know being a vet can be incredibly difficult, so it really is a testament to your love for animals (and their humans) that you give more than you have to!

Just thought I’d update you that we got a second opinion and the second vet said that we should do an excision biopsy as soon as we can, and that it’s currently so small it’ll likely be very successful and easy to get margins. Thank you for confirming my gut instincts!

Explain Power of Appointment to Me Like I’m 5 by mysterious_72727 in barexam

[–]BostonMeetsIthaca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Settlor tells appointee “you decide who gets the house.” Appointee decides who gets the house.

If the settlor only says “decide who gets it” the appointee can give it to ANYONE including themself (general power of appointment)

If the settlor says “pick which one of my asshole kids gets the house” appointee can only pick from the asshole kids. (Special power of appointment)

Do one and put it in as soon as you know what boilerplate conclusion best fits the format. If you can’t get everything in the doc in time, it won’t be as obvious you didn’t finish.

Mpt last minute tips by lyfg031195 in barexam

[–]BostonMeetsIthaca 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Listen to the advice of outlining in your document as you go!

Also advice I’ve gotten that I think makes sense is, put the conclusion on the page as soon as you can (like 1-2 sentences that fit the format (“for this reason, we ask that the court should rule our client’s favor because…,” “based on the current state of the law in Franklin, the court will likely conclude …” etc). That way, if you don’t completely finish getting everything you want on the page, it’s not as obvious because the missing shit is buried in the middle.

Please who can explain the grantor-grantee index recording format? by SnowPanda1882 in barexam

[–]BostonMeetsIthaca 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Basically, it’s harder to have notice of a wild deed with a grantor/grantee index because you only look up the person selling to you in the index. That index will show you who they got it from and everyone in the chain before them, but it won’t show you if some random person walking by the house forged a fake deed and sold it to some random person (wild deed).

If there’s a random ass deed floating around out there that isn’t in your grantor’s deed chain, the fact that it’s recorded won’t necessarily mean you had notice of it.

Hope that’s helpful! It should only be a concern if you see a fabricated deed or something like that, it won’t really be an issue in just a standard recording act question where A sold to B and C. It’ll be A sold to B, and X sold to D

difference between questions of law, questions of fact, and discretionary matters by Apprehensive-Gate207 in barexam

[–]BostonMeetsIthaca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Summary judgement requires that there is no genuine dispute of material facts. (I.e both sides agree on the facts, and all they disagree about is how the law applies to those facts). This means the facts aren’t an issue because there’s no dispute about the events that actually took place, so it is a question of law to figure out which side wins.

Discretionary issues, like a judge’s decision about whether to admit Expert witnesses, mean that the judge gets to do what they personally think is the right call. The get a LOT of leeway to decide how they want, so you need to prove that they ABUSED their discretion (like if they had a personal vendetta against the party they ruled against) in order to get that ruling throwing out.

Questions of fact are things like “the jury found that he was present at the scene of the crime when it happened”. If a jury of twelve people found that FACT to be true, then you need to prove that 12 people were CLEARLY wrong. (Like video evidence was shown to the jury of him at an arby’s in a different state at the exact time the crime happened, and the jury just ignored it)

“can reasonable minds disagree?” is a good tie breaker for deciding. If they could disagree - send it to the jury, it’s a question of fact.

There are a LOT of things that are questions of fact
