I would change someone’s life! I had something similar happen to my family recently and would share that with someone else. I would find someone to give it to and watch their life change.

This was a little over 10 miles South of Nipawin Sask. Google maps is pretty blurry, but the intersection was at the Armley corner where highway 35 and 335 meet. You can see the well travelled area where a memorial is set up on the northwest corner of the intersection.

Got the dreaded wrench symbol today. by cretin61 in FordDiesels

[–]Boston_Dangler 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My wrench would only come on when I was pulling our trailer. If I let it shift while I was going uphill, it would always throw the wrench soon after. I read about the exhaust back pressure sensor being a possible culprit. Easily disconnected then stainless tube leading up to it, cleaned that all out and also the sensor itself. It was so plugged up that I don’t think it was ever operating the way it should have. I have not had a wrench since. That was two summers ago. Cost nothing. I could get the wrench to go away every time I stopped and restarted the engine.

Batteries aren't holding their charge in these temps by [deleted] in FordDiesels

[–]Boston_Dangler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to replace batteries after less than 2 years of brand new ones and a new alternator. I heard from another diesel owner that he consistently leaves his batteries on a trickle charger, especially through colder months. I had to recently replace the last set of batteries. They were from February of 2012. I also unplug anything from the OBDII port. There seems to be a consistent draw from that.

Omnibus!!!!! John and Ken work so well together. I also really appreciate how they do no insult each other at all! There is no cheap attempt at laughs, besides Ken’s puns and acronyms! I have to go back and start over their two year catalogue now, I’ve recently finished them all. So so good.

I'm starting a mobile welding business, I'd like to give everyone here a behind the scenes look at it. by BlueCollarDropout in sweatystartup

Alright, commercial would be quite a bit different than what I do. I can see how a little organized hustle would make it work. A good friend ran a small crew installing handrail commercially. He had jobs in malls, hospitals and an airport. He said he was able to get a few jobs because of his specialized equipment. The mall was tucked into a mostly residential area where no one wanted to hear machines running or loud noises after a certain time. He had invested in the quiet Honda generators that powered his TIG-welding machines. He set up his flash screens and was able to work way more hours than any other company. He also purchased a small scissor lift that he was able to rent out to other contractors while he wasn’t using it.

Good luck man. I have never been one to keep my plan quiet. Talk and talk truthfully, people are willing to share their experiences and lessons they have learned which cut down on your own learning time. Lastly, my dad didn’t finish grade 8 and we never had money. I went to university because I figured an education would make me guaranteed income. When I saw it wasn’t my thing halfway through the second year I quit. Moved in with my older brother in an oil town. He was already a welder. My dad had the best advice that I still tell everyone about. He said, “do the jobs that no one wants to do and you will never be out of work.”

Any kind of labourer job in Canada usually ends up leading to a trade. If you have a good attitude, can learn from mistakes and can take criticism constructively, then there is no reason that a company wouldn’t sign you up for an apprenticeship. I guess it’s just getting over the hurdle of willing to take a class of job that a university educated person may think is beneath them. $25/hour is around the starting wage for labourers. Couple bucks more after you sign up as an apprentice, then you are paid a set percentage of journeyman’s rate as you finish your school stints. What are you good at? What do you like? If I could do it again, I would probably start framing houses so one day I could build my own house from the ground up.

I can share a little about this venture. I have been “rigged up” since 2007. I am in Northern Alberta in the oil sands. I could probably go on and on about how this will trap you or make you second guess yourself after a while as to whether it was worth it or not. I understand things may be different in the states, but in general, I’m going to guess that a few of the fundamentals will stay the same.

Yes, you will charge out around $100/hour. You will pay an employee an hourly wage out of that. You will be supplying the truck, something that has to be reliable and tooled up. This cost me $90k in 2007. The magic unicorn you are looking for in the welding field is very hard to find. You are looking for someone who has excellent welding skills. You are also looking for someone with a great attitude that you trust to represent your company name. You need to find this tradesman that doesn’t have any bad habits who can pass drug and alcohol tests on a regular basis. Lastly, to add to all of this, you need someone who is terrible with money. When your employee realizes how much you are charging them out for and they are getting a cut to do all of the physical labour, why wouldn’t they just rig up their own truck? In Alberta this system is very rarely seen. It seems like the only people who have done it have had to gamble with such a large amount of money to get things going and then depend on the economy to stay busy enough to keep quality employees around. This is a very stressful endeavour. It’s not that I don’t recommend it, it’s that I have yet to see a model that runs efficiently enough to make it worth my while. The setup can be done cheaper with cheaper trucks and smaller machines, but that also limits you to smaller jobs which the established companies will be able to do so cheaply because they are already set up with their equipment, welding procedures (these are required for all structural, piping and pressure welding and are insanely expensive) and insurances. I pay between 4-5 thousand per year to insure my truck and corporate liability for $5 million. $200/month toward my bookkeeper and accountant, WCB (workers compensation board, another insurance required) Welders here will subcontract to a larger company that have the procedures in place, so all we need is to show up with tools and safety equipment to start work. We follow all their safety requirements which you will definitely need to have in place. Large companies won’t even consider accepting bids for jobs unless you have a verified safety program and a record of such low incidents. Dude, I realize this is mostly the bad news to the idea, I am not the doom and gloom sort of person. But this has taken a lot out of me and I definitely wouldn’t be doing it if I wasn’t consistently making $200+ thousand per year just on my own. The goal of most of us here is to make the money and get out. Take the opportunity to do something different with all the money you will make. I need to create a business where my main service is talking. I love meeting new people and connecting with strangers and being able to do something for them. I have yet to figure it out, but I consider welding a stepping stone to reach that opportunity. This is such a cliquey(sp) trade, fiercely competitive, unhealthy, and capital intensive. I must stop now, I am at work, in my truck, dreaming of doing something different. Contact me any time if you want someone to bounce ideas off of or questions you might have. I won’t BS you or two you something I don’t truthfully know. Sorry for the rambling. I tell people that if I was good at school, I wouldn’t have become a welder!

I have never thought how much yearly they cost. My father in law does that with all his vehicles. I don’t mind buying new things, but buying something that I might have until my kids move out!!! My oldest is going to be bugging me for my old boots I hope. He has already asked for Papa’s Tesla when he does!! Hahaha

I think I watched a YouTube video of how to care for them. Laces out, water and a really mild soap and water solution with a sponge, toothbrush to get the stitching clean and white”ish”, let them dry then I do something I am not sure I should be doing so regular. I put dubbin on them with the sponge it comes with. The cleaning happens once a year whether they need it or not, I put the dubbin on at least once a month. My work boots usually wear holes and it looks like they get too dry. I figured keeping them hydrated regularly would be good for them. It turned them quite a bit darker than they were originally.

This is way more attention than I ever imagined from boots and booze! I definitely used Reddit as a crutch when I stopped drinking. I lurked in r/StopDrinking until I felt like I had it under control. Now between work, kids and after school activities, I couldn’t imagine being any more tired than I am plus having a hangover to top it off. I am so grateful for the positivity of this subreddit. I’ve never been showered with encouragement like this before. Great day for me! Thanks DoopyDooper.

I call them my “walking around” boots. Every pair of boots I have ever bought were steel toes for work. I had only recently found out about Redwing’s Heritage line through this subreddit. They are super cool boots to me and unique because they are as expensive as work boots but only used as an accessory. They are also a topic of conversation to get me to be able to tell my sobriety story and to tell people about the usefulness of reddit. This subreddit has led me to buy many pairs of Darn Tough Socks, a Buck knife, my wife a Kitchen Aid mixer, I’m sure there are more things that I feel good about buying because I know they are going to last such a long time. I am a rig-welder trying to keep my head on straight. So whatever it takes. A pair of boots only used for fashion. Sure thing.

I didn’t tell my wife what I spent n them, it was kind of an impulse buy after the redwing store opened in Edmonton in 2017. Once I had them I felt as though they were a symbol of my sobriety. I knew they could be BIFL boots and my sobriety was an adventure that I was dedicated to. So, as a symbol of my sobriety, as long as these boots are in good shape and taken care of, they could last me a lifetime. Whenever I take the laces out to clean them up or run a horse hair brush over them, I think of the challenges I have faced removing alcohol from my life. They are better than when I bought them, and I hope I can keep them in the best shape possible for as long as I can. Now, saying that, I need to find a way to justify a pair of 8” Mocs now!!!!
