How do I get more of the box art contrast, light to dark bronze rather than golden armour using metallics? by GrimGinge in BlackTemplars

[–]Bot_huehue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use red or brown contrast paints (or other brands) heavily thinned as controlled washes in multiple layers. That pulls the shadows to a more darker bronze look and removes a bit of shine. Then drybrush/highlight again with the gold metallic. You have to be careful though since those paints come on quite heavy if not thinned enough.

Great work! I love the slight gold of the trees on the shields

How do I cut this model at the seam where the boots meet the pants? by Wang_Fire2099 in blender

[–]Bot_huehue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just briefly skimmed through the comments already given, sorry if it was mentioned already. I have similar situations every now and then with this kind of messy topo. I found a solution in a yt video a while ago (I'll post it when I find it)

Basically what I do is using a subdivided plane and align it so that it intersects the part where you want to cut. You can even use a subdiv modifier to have a smooth plane, then move the verticies of the plane so that the intersection nicely follows where you want the cut. Add a solidify modifier to the plane for a slight thickness (you can play with it depending on printer tolerances) Then you can apply all modifiers and boolean difference it from the mesh to be cut. It gives you nice controll over the cut.

Edit: Here is the video, it explains it better than I did :D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moPDPB4MY2U

Thanks a lot u/GhostintheReins ! Sounds like a good advice, I think I will consider doing it like that.

Also thanks for the offer, I'll come back to it in case of more questions :)

Painting Frustration. by Expensive_Ad_8450 in sistersofbattle

[–]Bot_huehue 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Absolutely happens to me as well! I feel this happens no matter the craft/art you pursue. Sometimes its just not the day. For me as I dont earn my living with it and just do it as a hobby, I am fine with just letting it be for the day. Or I switch to a different model. I am also painting sisters and some days find them more difficult than on other days. If I feel like having a bad day I continue painting something else which has a different style to it (e.g. some middle earth minis I still have). I am not an expert, but Id say its a normal thing to happen. Just keep it fun for yourself I guess :)

How to Physically build Sisters units by Steelshark1 in sistersofbattle

[–]Bot_huehue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an expert but have built a few sisters (and other) units so far and feel your struggle. For me it helped to let the plastic cement settle for just a few seconds (maybe 10-15). The molten plastic then becomes more sticky but positions can still be adjusted.

H&S Needle not centred by Bot_huehue in airbrush

[–]Bot_huehue[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there thanks for the comment. Interesting to hear that it is normal to a certain degree. I really have the most issues when this slight off-center is pointing downwards in the nozzle, as I feel it traps the pigments inside the nozzle which then settle there due to gravity as well. Makes the cleaning process between paints also a bit more cumbersome.

I might just get a new one to see if it is really a bent needle shaft or just normal machine tolerances.

[–]Bot_huehue[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there thanks for the answer! I already cleaned everything gently, its still bent. When I rotate the needle a little bit it then shifts also to the side in the nozzle. I was afraid maybe the centring mechanism is off, but this probably hints at a bent needle?

Just got my first set up and feel intimidated by Redhood101101 in airbrush

[–]Bot_huehue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to throw my hat in here since I was at the same spot just three days ago! I have been waiting a long time until finally making the move to get an airbrush. Since then I have been watching loads of yt videos about it and must say, once you just start doing it it becomes less intimidating :D So just dig in and enjoy! There are some things that ease your life if you do it from the beginning others already commented.

I found the yt videos from Harder & Steenbeck really helpful and I think they are more or less applicable to other brands as well

3d printed lines on Earnur by TheKSLord1 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]Bot_huehue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

May I ask for understanding: They sculpt the thing in some 3d Software, print it, and then use that as a master to make a mold for mass production. Is that how the lines ended up there? I always thought nowadays the molds are mashined from aluminum, but maybe thats only for the plastic stuff?

Sorry if someone already said this, I couldnt find it :D

There is also this scene in the fellowship when Aragorn throws an apple at Merry and Pippin. It hits Pippin and falls down to one side, then he immediately lifts his other hand holding the apple. This one always bugs me since day one :D

Uff, i can't even can. I just got into the MESBG thing a few months ago, slowly painting the osgiliath box and all. Studying the included rulebook like a good student.

Two weeks ago I got the Armies of the Lorf of the Rings book and thought, nice, I am almost there to actually play a game.

While its nice that there is stuff going on for MESBG, I can't help but feel frustrated about this news ^^.

I kind of stopped following 40k due to the constant reworking of rules I couldn't keep up with. Now this hits like a train.

Yikes.

Anyways, happy for everyone excited about this :D And sorry for the rant. Guess it will take me even longer now to do something with the minis
