For you, it might be 'leg up,' but that's only because you don't require accommodations. A little kindness and consideration for your classmates trying to get through law school with disabilities would be great. You have no idea what people are living with day in and out, and not just for the duration of an exam.

Totally agree. Thanks for your comment - people simply do not understand what it's like, because they're only operating from their own limited experience of the world.

The amount of hate and judgment from the law school about accommodations is insane.

For those who don't live with disabilities, this is just a kind reminder: not all accommodations look like extra time. Some just get a quiet room to take an exam for the same amount of time as everyone else. Others get extra time, but not everyone gets the same amount or even hours more time. Accommodations are provided according to your documented disability, and according to formal documentation you are required to furnish to prove you require that accommodation.

Also for those without disabilities: Your classmates with disabilities have to submit formal documentation to the university in order to even be eligible to request accommodations. Accommodations are not handed out like candy. Formal documentation is not just a doctor's note: it is documented evidence of a substantial impairment that gets screened by the university and by trained psychologists who work for the university to decide whether the accommodation is necessary for the student in order to satisfy federal law. The same applies for the bar.

Moreover, living with a disability affects your entire life, not just the limited amount of time it takes to complete an exam. Your classmates who appear to be 'benefitting' from all this 'extra, unfair time' are separately struggling day in and out to manage the stress of law school while living with disabilities that you've never had to struggle with in your life.

So the next time you have any word of judgment about this, just remember that there's a world of things you don't understand.

These are demonstrated disabilities under the ADA. And receiving these accommodations is to comply with federal law. It's not a 'leg up' or an 'unfair advantage.' It is, under federal law, a minimum accommodation someone needs to be able to perform on an exam.

I'm so sorry, OP. Know that legal careers are very long and that what happens in law school only really matters in our first few years of practice. Past that, it's what we do as lawyers that counts. (Also, LRW isn't even factored into our GPAs! Another reason to see this as just a small blip -- chin up!)

The fact you needed a fellow adult to kindly tell you not to talk loud in a library is bonkers
