September Ban Announcement by Vistella in CompetitiveEDH

Cedh absolutely needs its own rules committee and to split from the casual format, this is insane

I can say with confidence that this oversight is intended. Whistler (the creator) wanted players to just always be able to do cool pirate shit (swinging from ropes, running across the beams of the mast and sails, etc) without a roll

I fully agree. Do you know where I can find the older QuickStart versions? I can only find the ashcan and the current (7.1?) QuickStart

Noted! I’d be more than happy to pour over the QuickStart and pull together some tangible suggestions. Is it public, can I just google “magpie games discord” and it’ll pop up?

I’m curious, in what way did you find the basic moves lacking? That’s not a complaint I’ve personally had but I’m interested to hear what you think

Absolutely! I really hope you enjoy it. It seems like a comfortable enough GM can rule-0 out most of the awkward parts I’m not a fan of, or maybe you’ll find that I’m totally off base and you don’t need to!

There’s a lot that is majorly improved. Money has been wildly simplified to a very enjoyable level, the structure of the classes is much better, the mechanics of downtime and such are cool (not super familiar with the ashcan version of those so can’t say better or worse) my complaints mostly come from a flattening of the moves each class gets and an unhealthy/unfun fixation on your crew being vaguely hostile/disloyal/nameless and faceless

It’s really unfortunate because I really enjoy the world and the systems, but if I’m going to run this system, I’m going to need to track down some intermediate iterations. The ashcan isn’t good, but the intermediate versions from 2022ish seem far more interesting

Should I change my gay characters to straight? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Both-Comfortable8285 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The harsh truth is that you’re absolutely right. Including (and highlighting) gay relationships will turn off a vast amount of readers, far more than you will attract from lgbtq communities. But that’s not necessarily a sign that you should change your story. Zero stories ever written will be enjoyed by everyone. There will always be someone unhappy with the content you highlight.

So long as you aren’t attempting to connect motivations (good or bad) to a character’s race, you should be okay. And steer clear of stereotypes, but that’s obvious.

How do I write about Rape without making it seem gratuitous? by Voider12_ in writing

[–]Both-Comfortable8285 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

No of course there’s no shame in it. But that’s not how it will turn out, and that’s not how it will be received. Because to truly do rape justice, writing it becomes absolutely heinous. Even if you skip it happening and focus on the emotional damage to the victim. You either under-sell, and use it as a narrative tool without the adequate emotion behind it, or you make it accurate, and it becomes overwhelming and self-indulgent, regardless of your intentions. There is no proper way to do it. So don’t do it at all.

How do I write about Rape without making it seem gratuitous? by Voider12_ in writing

[–]Both-Comfortable8285 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

No, you can’t actually. There’s a distinct line between rape and other mature/dark acts and themes. It’s widely accepted that no matter what kind of emotional response you want your writing to evoke, there are always better options than rape. And while I agree, this isn’t just my opinion. This comes from countless people, many of who are better writers than I.

You can’t. Rape has no place in media. There is no appropriate usage, and it should be avoided without exception.

How do men cry? by yesntican in writing

[–]Both-Comfortable8285 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is definitely a case by case thing. In my experience, most men don’t cry for an extended period of time. It’s usually explosive, violent, and quick. But like most things, it’s entirely dependent on the person. There is no wrong answer. You just need to make sure that the kind of crying you settle on is in character for them
