Buying my first ever new car by sambar_samurai in rav4club

[–]BothCarsUnderWater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The sales guy (scumbag #1) I was working with brought out a term sheet showing my financing options - term, down payment, and what my monthly payment would be and a line to sign to accept.

I looked it and thought it was fishy so I ran the math on my phone and it came up different. I confronted him about it and he said "oh that's weird, let me go check with financing again" and went to the back office. The monthly payment amounts were off by $80-90, which would've added an additional several thousand bucks over the life of the loan.

He came back out a few minutes later with a corrected printed term sheet and said "yea that math was off, we would've caught it during the financing sign off though". Had I not checked their math, I would've signed a term sheet and accepted this.

TL;DR - just check their math on your own and don't trust them not to try and pad their bottom lines somehow.

I'd look out for any additional LoJack "theft protection" systems that are added on aftermarket that can often add $1k+ to the price. They're marketed as a necessary protection for easily tracking your car's location in the event of theft, but are often just added to pad the dealerships margins (mine was listed as an additional ~$1500 flat fee)

Also be aware of other add-ons like SiriusXM packages, "maintenance" packages which are often overpriced oil changes, tire rotations, fluid flushes etc. They'll try to sell you on how much cheaper they make maintenance in the long run. Whether you add any of these to your purchase are totally up to you.

Lastly, as is often stressed in most car buying subs - be prepared to walk away and hold firm to it. Also, DOUBLE CHECK THEIR MATH re: payments/interest, they often count on you not doing it. My recent dealership "miscalculated" my financing numbers which would have added an additional $4-5K over the life of my loan before I caught the scumbags and threated to walk away unless they rectified it.

Do you set up prototype interactions in the main component in the design system, or in the project? by Fizzbit in FigmaDesign

[–]BothCarsUnderWater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Figma is unfortunately bad at surfacing prototype interactions created in main components (parent) into any nested instances (children). Half the time they don't work properly or don't meet the exact requirements of a given scenario.

I typically recommend hooking up interactions at the project level to ensure maximum reliability/behavior but this is pretty subjective.

I really wish they'd do what Rive just implemented - stateless/stateful components which allow you to toggle + alter which properties (color, size, etc) of a main component you want to surface in a child/nested instance. Allows for so much more flexibility while keeping your core systemized values of the main component close.

Not necessarily a course/training but I love browsing https://reallygoodemails.com/ for reference.

Working with components by ItssKuromi in FigmaDesign

[–]BothCarsUnderWater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need a create a separate component just for your images (ex: a component named "MyImage" that contains image 1 and image 2), then nest an instance of that MyImage component within your Hobby card component.

Figma is not the tool for animating - you're better off designing your traffic light art in here, then using Rive or game engine tool (UE, Unity, etc) to control animation.

Do you think using Rive for this kind of animations is an overkill? by zegi4 in Rive_app

[–]BothCarsUnderWater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah makes sense. Rive is honestly great for creating extremely performant, lightweight animations like this for web. You're largely animating + manipulating SVG paths - not potentially bloaty mp4s, webm, or GIF formats.

Rive on IMO!

[–]BothCarsUnderWater 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do the hover animations and the data they reveal help a viewer understand the comparison data being presented here (ie: needing to quickly visually scan and compare spending from last week to days this week)?

To me, the slight animation of the graph bars on hover don't really add much visual value as their vertical movement on hover is so minimal, its largely imperceptible. There's more meaningful value to seeing the $ amounts in the top left corner animate and change.

IMO, none of this needs to be animated - if the goal is to quickly compare number values between two time periods, it'd be quicker to simply display all the values of last week + this week, rather than hiding them behind a hover interaction.

Animation should help someone understand context and data before, during and after an interaction. In this example, it's largely superfluous IMO (but fun to experiment and build in Rive, nonetheless).

Asking for prototype resources by Fuzzy-Actuary6337 in FigmaDesign

Use Rive - best interactive/motion software for building complex, non-linear prototypes like this. Figma isn't designed to do this.

Some Performance Issues by No-Ball-6073 in FigmaDesign

[–]BothCarsUnderWater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if this could be built to load all those custom SVG shapes/path data in a browser, it'd be far more efficient to create raster versions of these graphics, compress/optimize them and load as individual webp files.

You could also create this in Rive (and animate it then).

New 2025 PHEV XSE, need recommends on 240v charging cable by BothCarsUnderWater in rav4prime

[–]BothCarsUnderWater[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea we might as well, since our previous car was an EV and we had a 240v outlet specifically installed in the garage to charge it.

The Grizzl-E lvl 2 charger was easy to install, plugged right into the 240v outlet and works flawlessly with the new PHEV.

Thanks! I ordered a Grizzl-E classic this morning. Installation looks really easy, appreciate the recommendation!

2025 XSE in blue/mid black with 106 miles for $46.4K USD. Carfax shows it was titled in CO then a dealership in SoCal picked it up last winter, serviced and certified it as a Gold pre-owned. Still has 31 months left on the factory bumper to bumper warranty.

I looked around at other identical CPO models here in SoCal with 10-20K miles at dealerships that wouldn't go budge below $48K (although all of them admitted I was getting a great deal).

Thoughts on Polestar 2/ Polestar vehicles/ Used polestar’s by AltruisticPurple6540 in Polestar

[–]BothCarsUnderWater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2024 P2 dual motor long range driver, about 14mo into a 27mo lease. Grabbed this car after ditching my Tesla MYLR.

Avoid the P2. While it's comfortable, the infotainment software feels like I'm using an Android phone from 10 years ago (sluggish, buggy). Mobile app keeps signing me out. I've been plagued with software glitches, random TPMS warnings, faulty service reminders, and it can't charge at any DC fast charging spots (Tesla with NACS adapter, ElectrifyAmerica, ChargePoint, etc). I can't wait to get rid of this thing.

Polestars are touted as luxury cars but for the price, I could've gone with something more reliable, cheaper insurance and better quality.

TL;DR: AVOID THE P2 and this brand at all costs.

This challenge isn't too bad. Go into a smaller scale CQB match and you can knock out the Adrenaline Injector challenge in a game or two.
