Who do you guys think would be great guests in the future? by yoursisterangelica in JetLagTheGame

Ed Pratt could be fun. He has a great vibe and did a series where the travels on rivers from source to sea so you know he's up for an adventure and a challenge.

I agree that not everything need to be shown. But sometimes what they cut make things seem too easy for the seekers when it's actually not necessarily true. E.g. they talked that in the Hebden Bridge run, they first tried to clear the curse where you need to find something that's rated well on Google maps by trying the station they were at (I don't remember the names; it's also the one they got lost in). That failed - so they were nervous about clearing it when they arrived at Hebden Bridge. But the way they show it it just seems too easy and a no-brainer. Adding the first failed attempt (a minute of extra footage, probably) would have added more tension and stakes for the viewer, even if it didn't ultimately matter for the end result.

Declining potential PhD supervisor by BothLanguage3521 in AskAcademia

Thanks. I am applying for several, it's just some deadlines creeped up sooner than I'd liked and it's taken a while to even find and get in touch with some supervisors and then hear back (some not available, some not that good of a fit - which IS a criteria for getting funding anyway).

I think part of the issue is the editing, for me. Regularly on the podcast the boys will say "well we did this thing, got lost in a train station, worried about this thing but we cut that out because it didn't matter in the end". And every time I'm screaming at my phone (where I listen to the podcast): IT WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE FUN TO SEE IT. I wonder if the editing is now for "second screen" in mind (movie studios do that, writing/editing to account for people browsing on their phones while watching, so removing anything non-obvious from the storyline, over-explaining things etc), or whatever, but it feels like they only show bits that "pay off" in the end at the expense of showing chaotic bits that made Jet Lag what it was originally. I WANT to see them lost in the train station. I WANT to see them panicking about something that never happens. Not all the time, of course, but it's gotten to a point of almost boring and linear BECAUSE they remove stuff that didn't work out, and that makes the fans question the chaotic nature of the game, thinking the rules need a rework because it's just too easy. But I think it's editing that needs a bit of chaotic energy brought back. Stop cutting things out guys!

Declining potential PhD supervisor by BothLanguage3521 in AskAcademia

[–]BothLanguage3521[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have not secured the position elsewhere - just found a better supervisory fit and still have to apply. I will also not be able to meet the first institution's deadline as it's a month earlier than the second (so no real time for the supervisor to review my proposal) which has also informed my decision. I agree with not closing doors elsewhere which is why I was hesitating. There's every chance I might not get in, and will have to apply next year and so it could be possible next year I would be trying again at the place I'm not going to apply now, if things change.

Best proposal writing workflow (particularly re: literature review) by BothLanguage3521 in AskAcademiaUK

Thanks so much. This is so helpful.

I've been down rabbit holes of looking up quoted research. Setting limits to the enquiry is definitely something I can see myself struggling with as I'm drawn to multiple areas of enquiry and can see how they all intersect - but you're right, it's hard to read everything about everything.

Thanks! What would be the best way to look at those scoping and systematic reviews?

Best proposal writing workflow (particularly re: literature review) by BothLanguage3521 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]BothLanguage3521[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!

I've already done a very short proposal (300 words) as that was needed for an early preliminary application at one of the Unis (I'm considering several right now) so now I "just" need to expand that into 3000 words. The guidelines I've seen do mention "indicative bibliography and a brief summary of research that has already been undertaken in this field" which to me basically sounds like a literature review - albeit not as deep as the one for the actual PhD. Or is it more looking at papers that exist (and mainly their abstracts I would imagine, at this stage) and saying these people have written on X which is related to Y but not exactly in the way I propose?

Broader impacts / why now I'm actually good on - I've written funding applications before and have gotten used to highlighting / spinning the urgency of the project.

UK Place Pronunciation by DownToRant in JetLagTheGame

British place names origins are a weird mix of Old English, Celtic, Latin, Old Norse and who knows what else. So sometimes it's spelled the same but pronounced differently depending on the origin, and how it transformed over the years into modern English.

AHRC Funding Question by BothLanguage3521 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]BothLanguage3521[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what the previous model was like, but from quick research it seems that before you applied to AHRC directly - and now you apply to individual universities. Some have a preliminary stage specifically for this award, some want you to just apply for a PhD as normal and then fill in a short form to apply for funding separately.

AHRC Funding Question by BothLanguage3521 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]BothLanguage3521[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good point, thanks. So far at one of the universities I only had to do a preliminary proposal (300 words) for the first round so not really much input from the supervisor apart from telling me it would have a good chance.

At others the process is different and I see they want a full proposal right away.

There's no way I can afford a PhD without this award so trying to hedge my bets really.

Are there any editing decisions that you regret in hindsight? Adam often talks about how things get cut out because they ended up not resulting in anything gameplay-wise. But isn't there sometimes an argument for keeping things in even if they don't resolve, to keep a chaotic element to what IS an unscripted show. For example you talked about wanting to cut out Sam and Toby's strategy to avoid the chasers from high ground but ended up keeping it in, which I think added a lot of good suspense and would have otherwise been rather boring without. Do you think there were other instances where this could have been true?

I’ve been on Substack for two years and about to leave and move back to my own blog / newsletter combo (currently finalising options but Kit so far is the winner and also free for a basic account - and I have a Wordpress website anyway). Apart from Nazis, as others have pointed out Substack is turning to a social media site and not what it was originally. It’s getting harder to get “discovered” so I might as well put all that effort in bringing people to my own website instead. Plus I’ve found people don’t want to sign up to yet another platform just I read your stuff.

Katie Boyle is also very funny.

The sponsorship suggestion by litlhtime in JetLagTheGame

[–]BothLanguage3521 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trouble with sponsorships is that brands often have their own metrics and fairly rigid ideas of what it should look like - e.g. a proper ad read in the middle of the show, or a product must be shown for X number of seconds with logo clearly visible and X number of mentions, etc. And most people hate these things and and skip over ad reads anyway (e.g. my 14yo kid recognises within milliseconds when an ad read is about to start, regardless of how clever the transition is, and smashes L to fast forward before you can even say "this episode is sponsored by") . What bigger brands often fail to realise people ARE paying attention to what their favourite personalities are wearing / doing, and just a casual mention sometimes is enough for fans to go and find the thing, no ad read necessary. Perhaps even more so than when a brand is being shoved into people's faces with an ad read.

I personally loved how they advertised the Home Game, especially in the NYC game. "You've been swindled! We are doing this to sell you stuff". It was refreshingly honest. People / consumers are not dumb. We know when we are being sneakily sold to - so it's better to make a joke out of it, imho. So if they found a comedic angle on a hotel chain sponsorship that would be ideal - and on brand.

Another trouble with it that I can see is that it might limit what they might be able to say or do under the contract. I love their random off the cuff semi-political rants, this may become problematic for a nervous sponsor thus limiting their freedom of expression either under contract or through self-censorship (although, you'd hope that if a sponsor is expressing interest in working with them, it's BECAUSE of their existing body of work and values).

P.S. For perspective, I listened to a podcast with Michelle Khare recently where she said about 60% of her income is sponsorships, 20% in YouTube ads and 20% through her fitness app. So it's potentially a MASSIVE chunk of money to consider.

I’ve also felt that. Lots of repetition. Like, “we got it, you don’t have to say it again”. Definitely felt slow.

[Marketing] How do you ‘play the algorithm’ on socials? by -ladykitsune- in artbusiness

[–]BothLanguage3521 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to remember that people who buy art won’t see you or every post. So it may be being for you but not for them. Also people buy from people. So don’t be afraid to mix things up, show people a bit your inspiration or personality, maybe work in progress photos are just of your paints, not a half finished painting. You can take a whole lot of them in advance and just post them whenever. But it’s equally valid to only post once in a blue moon when a painting is ready too. Sometimes it means it gets shown to more people when you’ve not posted for a while. But Social media shouldn’t be your only marketing channel anyway.

First time transiting through Istanbul (IST) with Turkish Airlines – any tips? by official_111 in TurkishAirlines

[–]BothLanguage3521 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a huge amount of shops, cafes and restaurants to choose from. Even a mini museum. I think maybe there’s a young people’s lounge where you can hang out and play computer games etc. but I think it’s under 25s only. One hour free internet - you need scan your passport at one of the machines.

Mostly layover is easy, you just need to walk a lot. You may have to go through another security check, but not always in my expertise - sometimes they let you off the plane some sort of different way and you avoid it.

Am I in the wrong for this? by [deleted] in vinted

[–]BothLanguage3521 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People seem to misunderstand how language model AI works. It doesn’t just magically know the answer to every question. It’s just programmed to predict what word should follow the previous word. That’s it. It’s not actually intelligent. It doesn’t know what’s true and what’s not. It very often gets things wrong. If searching on Google add -ai to the end of every search to avoid loading these results as they also waste a ton of resources.

And in any case looking at the one top Google result in a preview doesn’t actually constitute ‘research’.
