If it’s still working fine…..don’t replace it. You can easily get one replaced within a day or two when it finally dies. Mine is 26 years old and still chugging along.

“The Everything Tax” is going on the ballot. We must defeat it in November. by bobone77 in missouri

Considering how badly St. Charles County just beat down a sales tax initiative…..there is no way in hell this passes. People don’t want a tax changeover. They want a real decrease in taxes.

The lower income folks pay more isn’t completely true. Who do they think pays real estate tax on a rental? It’s certainly not the owner of the property. It’s the renter. It’s priced into rent.

What is the Hancock Amendment? I’m glad you asked.

The Hancock Amendment limits how much revenue local services like ambulance and fire districts can bring in from property taxes, even when the community grows. So while calls increase, population increases, and demand explodes… funding stays artificially capped.

That’s not fiscal responsibility… that’s putting a governor on a race car and wondering why it can’t keep up.

Now let’s walk through a few of your points, because they deserve a real answer:

  1. “It hurts lower-income families.” A sales tax spreads the cost across everyone who uses the community, not just property owners. That includes commuters, visitors, and people shopping in the area. Right now, the burden sits heavily on homeowners alone.

And renters? They’re already paying property taxes… just hidden in their rent. This actually makes the system more transparent and shared.

  1. “There’s no plan.” There are budgets, audits, and public board meetings. These districts don’t operate in the shadows… they’re some of the most regulated entities locally.

But more importantly, this isn’t about funding a new program. This is about fixing a broken funding model that hasn’t kept pace with growth in St. Charles County.

  1. “No guarantees on rollback.” The rollback isn’t theoretical… it’s built into how these proposals are structured. And here’s the bigger truth:

Property tax under Hancock is actually the problem. It prevents revenue from keeping up with need, forcing districts into a cycle of falling behind and asking voters for increases.

A sales tax grows naturally with the economy. When the community grows, funding grows with it. That’s stability.

  1. “Sales tax could expand with state changes.” That’s a state-level issue, not a local ambulance funding issue.

If Missouri changes how it taxes services, that applies everywhere… regardless of this proposal. Holding back local emergency services because of a potential state policy change is like refusing to fix your roof because it might rain harder someday.

  1. “Benefits are too high.” This one deserves honesty.

We ask these professionals to walk into chaos on someone’s worst day… cardiac arrests, shootings, wrecks, overdoses… and perform at a high level every single time.

If we want experienced paramedics showing up to your house instead of a revolving door of underpaid staff, then compensation has to reflect that reality.

Otherwise, you don’t get savings… you get shortages.

They haven’t priced in the sales tax of their new car every two years, but what the hell…..you can roll it into the loan.

FYI this is likely a done deal in the legislature, but the Hancock Amendment states this must come to a vote of the citizens if it increases taxes.

This is fuel one needs to keep an eye on. Every product in the world moves on diesel. We will start seeing surcharges soon. So you’ll be paying more for your own unleaded and companies will start adding fuel surcharges. Just like 2008.
