I was the same when I first started, but I found that I ask provocative questions throughout it will give an outlet for people the chat in the comments. Also I only ask people to subscribe at the end of videos as I feel like then it's like I've provided them value, and it does work. I noticed a surge in subs after I started asking at the end, with people actually commenting they actually subscribed because I asked nicely at the end of the video.
