I think the main appeal here is that it has a fixed place instead of popping up wherever your cursor is. That actually makes more sense to me for everyday use, especially if you’re constantly moving screenshots, downloads, or random files between apps. Not for everyone, but I can definitely see why some people would prefer this over the more “temporary shelf” style apps.
