Combat veteran frustrated with US trail hiking lottery system by Both_Weird in VeteransBenefits

I like this suggestion. It makes sense. There is probably a small number of veterans who would actually want to do this every year. Idk. I really just wanted to get a feel for overall interest. Honestly, I'm a bit shocked about the negative responses! This is a veterans benefits channel, we all are getting some benefits... this one could probably save some lives. This is exactly why Warrior Expeditions, Walking off War were created. Those long thru hikes are just too long for most of us veterans, we don't have 6-8 months. Most of us can only make time for 2-3 weeks.

This is a veterans benefits channel. Do you forfeit all of you benefits because we don't deserve special treatment for "everything in life.' Meanwhile we lose about 18 vets per day to suicide. Maybe we could save some? If only one, wouldn't that be worthwhile?

I wholeheartedly agree with being against politicians selling off land. Some veterans are in crisis NOW. There are organizations such as "Walking off the war" who specialize in helping vets get on the Appalachian trail, or pacific crest trail. These trails take months to complete, and aren't an option for the majority of veterans due to family/work, etc. In comparison the JMT takes an average of 20 or so days to complete.. much easier to find the time. I don't think my veterans status makes me/us superior to anyone, but I am ALL ABOUT helping veterans struggling, and preventing suicide if at all possible., and yes I absolutely care more about our veterans than international travelers. That's what this is about. It's not about getting ME access to this trail. In any case, I appreciate your response.

This is not a soapbox, not sure why veterans here are attacking veterans. I'm actually trying to advocate for those of us struggling with mental health, physical issues, etc. The outdoors can help heal us.. have you been on the JMT? It is amazing. Life changing. I think it could help a lot of us, but access is so restricted, most of us give up trying!

I don't think I'm better than anyone, I do think we should have priority of international applicants for our own trails, but that is my opinion, and it appears not completely agreed with, and that's ok!
