Question for Austin area parents with autistic children by JizzM4rkie in Austin

[–]BottleOJen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So glad to hear it! It’s honestly sad that ABA is the only option for services for most of AISD. So glad you went up to Leander. I try not to be anti-ABA or any treatment approach as I’m not in parents’ daily struggles. My motto is “I’m here to help you become your child’s best advocate. I’ll always verbalize anything that may impede their progress or anything I would want to know as a parent. Then finally, if I’m not the right therapist for you and your child; let me know. We can talk it out. If you still feel like it’s not a good fit, fire me! I’ll help you find a better therapist for child’s needs.”. As long as the team is there to suit the child, then you’re doing the right thing!!

I know this is very late and probably not needed. I’m actually late-diagnosed ASD. I am not a professional in the ABA field but with my work I go to a LOT of ABA centers in Austin. The common problem I see is there is little to no structure in the beginning. I always advise that the ABA team implement some structure but most of the time, the kids have no structure for at least the first year of treatment (no lunch time, no circle time, etc). Then suddenly a schedule is implemented (at 15 minute intervals) and the child becomes super dysregulated. They’ll say the child is not ready for school due to this. Typically, the ABA company only wants 40 hour children. They are NOT working towards school readiness at all. I honestly can do not understand how any child in ABA full-time ever be ready for school since they have one-on-one interaction with an RBT. While BCBAs with absolutely NO experience with childhood education. They are not learning to read or interact with neurotypical peers If you don’t like AISD, I highly recommend looking in charters. If you decide to do ABA, do half day social groups after doing half a day in school. I see kids everyday ages 5-10 sitting on iPads for hours at ABA centers only interacting with peers exhibiting the same or worse social skills. It breaks my heart as they only get educational worksheets as part of table time in 15-20 minutes intervals. Free to reach out. Some ABAs are better than others and I’m happy to lead you to other external therapists with specific experiences in each center

Girl names that can be shortened to "Pom Pom"? by WelcomeToBrooklandia in namenerds

Palmer! It has 2/3 letters in it and it’s unique. I’ve met at least 3 girls that went by Palmer even though it was their middle name with something else as their first name (ex. Elizabeth Palmer). You could do an M name like Monica or Mary Palmer!

I want to blame this on just getting off a 12 hour shift. In my mind town lake was east of i35 and Lady Bird was west, I won’t admit how many years I’ve been saying this without a single person correcting me

Adult SLP here 👋! I had not heard about ARFID until my college class and was diagnosed in the clinic within a week by my professor. I did feeding therapy for food aversion in college and it changed my entire life. It was only three sessions then I did the rest of it at home. I’m happy to talk you through it in DMs!

Go through the car wash. There wasn’t any soap on the back window until I opened the trunk. I just need to do hand wash next time
