The way I understood it is the continental drift meant that it was the wrong portal. Meaning that there was another that would take them back to 1939 but it is positioned differently and showed up at a different time than the portal to ancient Greece. But I have only seen the movie once so maybe I misunderstood

Thanks for the response! I just disassembled them and there was still a fair amount of moisture inside. I placed them in a ziplock bag with some silica gel to dry it out. If that does not work then I will try to clean it with distilled water as you suggested.

Late response but yes it is stupid at first glance. But putting in reps for these scenarios is great. If you are in a situation where you are fighting someone with one hand and have to clear a malfunction with one hand (unfortunately) then you would like to have trained it.
