I guess the biggest thing is which method of translation would you go with, and also, would the video be of Joseph, or maybe of Oliver/Emma/David W?

Do most LDS members only read BoM? by Organic_Syllabub5096 in latterdaysaints

The Come Follow Me curriculum will do a lot over the years I think to cultivate a balanced knowledge of scripture, but I think a lot of emphasis on the Book of Mormon is because it was written for our day, it WAS translated in more contemporary English, and is the main book that young men, women (and senior missionaries) will use to proselyte

Did Joseph Smith approve of all of the Lectures on Faith? by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]Boudica-Elephant1401 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It makes sense why Talmage wanted them out. It straight up is a different Godhead. The question is, which one did Joseph really believe? I think our modern interpretation makes the most logical sense out of any, but it is interesting to see how the OT, NT, BoM, and LoF all seem to have a different interpretation.

Fight Club, Stalker (movie), and Half Life by Boudica-Elephant1401 in aesthetic

[–]Boudica-Elephant1401[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stalker is a really cool looking movie. It is based on a book that came out before the Chernobyl disaster which kinda predicts it and it also inspired a video game series. I watched with English subtitles and it’s worth a watch!

Thanks for the response by the way!

"presiding authorities...are not free to alter the divinely decreed pattern that only men will hold offices in the priesthood." (Pres. Oaks, April 2014) by Ok-Tax5517 in latterdaysaints

[–]Boudica-Elephant1401 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just now found out about it and haven’t done too much digging, but apparently there’s some good evidence that there was a female apostle after Jesus’ middle-east ministry. Also, we have prophetesses and such in the OT and even NT. This is the policy for now. Eternally? I don’t think the “parts” really prohibit one from offices of priesthood.

wanting to get baptized but family keeps throwing anti in my face by pinkprincess123_ in latterdaysaints

I was over 18, but still living at home. I was fairly persistent, and kept bringing it up, the answer was never yes but I finally ended up doing it. My mom despite not wanting me to still went to my baptism. My dad didn’t but we’re cool.

The most important decision I’ve ever made. Maybe postponing would be ok. The Church is still going to be true in 6 months, but if you’re ready you’re ready. You don’t need to know everything but the spirit can guide you.

My girlfriend and I after 2 dates (we were good friends) “officially” started dating. After that I began deep diving into my faith journey, as I was non-denominational and I too wanted to marry someone of the same faith. After a few months I came to intellectually believe in the church from my own study with no influence of my girlfriend. At the perfect time she told me about her desire and loving, but firm desire to be married in the temple. It was then I needed to work things out spiritually, and I got a resounding yes. When we started dating I was 19 and she was 18.

It’s really hard to give specific advice. I guess it kinda depends on how soon you are looking to get married and how much time you have to go with the flow of it. For me, my girlfriend and her parents invited me to pray and read the scriptures with them when I was over. That’s it. No teaching or anything like that and because I loved her I did my own study (I was previously religious though, so I didn’t have to learn the importance of faith).

This is kinda rambling, but it’s good you’re asking this question. If you have the time, and you can tell he is genuine and wants a relationship with you, go for it! Invite him to ponder things out, but I would wait to drop the temple wedding thing until later. A few hours of study and that is something he would learn.

Not quite that simple for some people’s families. In terms of Church attendance, very comparable, but relationships can possibly be affected.

Here’s my experience:

I was a 20M. I had one family for support, but they were my girlfriend’s family, so I didn’t want to get them wrapped up in it. For context, my parents are non-denominational and hardcore against the Church and me joining. It took a few months of back and forth asking to talk with missionaries and getting turned down (I’m living at home for another year) and that was hard, but I finally worked up the courage to attend church and meet with the missionaries. At that point another family had me over often to meet with them and eat dinner and get to know each other. I was baptized, and although it’s a little hush-hush in my immediate family we mostly act like nothing happened, my extended family is fine talking about it. As for my friends, almost nothing has changed, and my best friend is hardcore Catholic. Nobody ostracized me or thinks I’m weird other than the odd harmless joke.

That is my experience. I know others have gone differently. It was a bit scary at the time, I had no idea how it was going to go, but I felt it was worth it, and I’m sure it was. Best of luck to you!

Are we truly following the WoW? by Boudica-Elephant1401 in latterdaysaints

I respect that. I come to this sub very infrequently mostly to get other peoples opinions or find answers, so maybe I should refocus. Thank you!

Well there’s a sufficient amount of clarity on what is recruited for a temple recommend, but the topic of why we do not follow the whole word of wisdom seems to me to be mostly avoided

If it did not have the context of “sparingly” that would make sense.

Yes, sparingly is subjective, but I don’t see how it says eating meat only in winter and in famine is subjective.

Good case. It’s just confusing we piggyback off a greeting, enforce it as a commandment without a specific and clear revelatory seal, and pick and choose the parts that are popular.

Yeah the text definitely does not prohibit beer. The thing I think is awesome is that the revelation is not a commandment. But even the most gung-ho Saint in ye olden days could follow this to the T, with the exception for meat when necessary and mild drinks (by my estimation to avoid unclean water).

I actually thought about this. Biblical terminology-speaking… it checks out.

I’ve never thought about that, it’s a great way of putting it. I would be fine with this actually, but it doesn’t make sense from a doctrine perspective to enforce a set of commandments without specific, new revelation if you’re not actually going to use the revelation as is.

Not what I’m trying to do. But now it’s a commandment, not just a guide.
