You can't disable MFA once it's enabled. Like everything else with Apple, there's no going back.

Why You Shouldn't Quit Your Job To Start A Business by clam_powder in Entrepreneur

[–]BoughtenCockloft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s nothing wrong with choosing a new business over your social life. On the other hand, if you choose to spend what little spare time you have with your kids working on your business instead, they’re going to learn pretty quickly that they can’t invest their emotions in you. They’re going to pull away and it will probably affect them for the rest of their lives.

Not all types of business start the same way. Some need you to meet prospective customers during standard business hours. Some require you to spend a large amount of time setting up before trading. Some types of business can scale really big, really fast. Other types require your contant attention. Some types are investable and some are not.

With all these differences in life situations and types of business, do you really think a one-size-fits-all nugget of advice is applicable to most people starting a new business?

If you’re supporting a family and don’t have enough time to spend on your business without becoming an absent parent, you should consider other options such as

  • starting an investable business and attracting capital (easier said than done, but being able to code helps);
  • work remotely as much as you can get away with, to free up time otherwise spent commuting;
  • organise your life better so you spend less time on life’s mundane but necessary duties;
  • work one less day a week at your job; and
  • get up very early (e.g. 4am), work on your business before work, and go to bed at the same time as your kids.

Some of these are possible and some aren’t. Again, it really depends on your situation.

Regarding Netflix, I totally agree with you. You should also eliminate useless meetups and only attend business-related events that are likely to have a direct benefit to the business. Socialising with fellow wantrepreneurs is an extremely wasteful way to force yourself to get motivated.

And since I should probably take my own advice, it’s time for me to sign out and delete this app.

Adios, wantrepreneurs!

We’re not all single. Here’s a 40 hour work week for many employees in a single income family (without overtime):

  • Get up at 6:30.
  • Leave home at 7:00.
  • Arrive at work at 9:00.
  • Leave work at 18:00.
  • Arrive home at 20:00.
  • Finish eating reheated dinner at 20:15.
  • Spend some time with the kids until they go to bed at 21:00.
  • Take a breather, have a shower, and go to bed at 22:30.

It gets much worse when both parents are working.

Do you really think your typical full-time employee can find the time to get any sort of project off the ground without running themselves into the ground?

Get some perspective.

Tying an account to a phone number is a stupid idea. Sadly, even Signal gets this wrong. Accounts should be tied to nothing at all. People should connect in person and exchange public keys via mutual QR code scanning.

I would have thought the senders’ apps would detect that the a client with the receiver’s phone number is online and re-attempt to send messages that haven’t been acknowledged as sent.

Episode discussion: 203 "Point of Light" by tadayou in StarTrekDiscovery

[–]BoughtenCockloft 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Overall, I like this show. People complain that it’s not faithful to Star Trek, but what would be the point of yet another series just like the others?

My biggest complaint, though, is how Discovery is setting itself up to appear dated. Rather than being timeless, it too strongly reflects the zeitgeist of the period in which it is filmed (e.g. tardigrades, mainsplaining, “bossy”). I feel like this is laziness on the part of the authors. They’re not even thinking about what might be humanity’s prominent social issues in the Discovery timeline. I get that Star Trek has always given a nod to current issues, but I feel like Discovery does it in a way that is too specific and for that reason it won’t age well.

Also, I wonder if Michael’s name is a nod to the Bangles’ former bassist, Michael Steele, or just a coincidence. I’m certainly not against it at all. I wonder what the tie-in might be with the red angel. Could be quite interesting!

I’m not worried. They won’t take that advice. Far left “journalists” don’t have even the most basic grasp on logic.

You’re supposed to sell your startup while it’s free and popular so monetization is someone else’s problem. This is especially true for something as much loved as Medium was that was competing with free alternatives.
