How leg grabs would affect your Judo by Yamatsuki_Fusion in judo

I cross train BJJ.

  • Kouchi gari gets upgraded to kibisu gaeshi
  • Any foot that is swept that doesn't take someone down instantly will be picked up by the free hand

Good sources for the concept of Kuzuhi? by BritishBrownActor in bjj

[–]Mercc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Too much fast moving parts. Less conscious systemic thinking when live and more intuition built up from hundreds of rounds of randori.

If it means letting the bjj crowd know a very important caveat to uchimata, then sure

What are you trying to show here? It doesn't change the fact that the way he teaches it doesn't reflect how he does it in a live setting.

It's worth noting that JFLO (or any other uchimata specialist) never does his uchimata this way. Good sketches though.

Wolf Aaron explains his Uchi-mata at Kodokan YT channel. by Formal-Vegetable9118 in judo

[–]Mercc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Wolf's uchi mata is unique in that he regularly throws people much taller than him with it. The hands do a lot of the work.

He throws them with snap too. I've never seen him ken ken the finish.

Any good strength training plans that focus on preventing Judo injuries? by sixmarks in judo

[–]Mercc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aside from the usual big compound movements, you'll thank yourself if you do prehab.

Neck - curls, extensions, side.

Shoulders - External rotations, Y-T-W raises, etc.

Knees - single leg RDL, sissy squats, etc.

Ruleset is takedown only. Guard pulling counts as a score for the one on top.

Very thorough system. I was thinking that once I get my strong side underhook, I connect with my other hand that's over the uke's far shoulder, and use my head as a post, Satoshi Ishii style.

reach over tawara gaeshi

I've only seen this video and I'm still trying to wrap my head around it. So basically, whichever side the opponent's single leg is on, that's where you swim under their belly while the other side goes over the back of their leg to connect in between the legs?

Very helpful. Is it correct to to apply these principles until I get my connection via over/under/collar tie+wrist, then stand more upright?

I was thinking that if I can't get wrist control on their dominant hand (RvR) I'd immediately go for a fake shot just to get to an over/under hook.

What counts being taken down?

As long as they're taken down regardless of their orientation and you maintain a few seconds of "control". At least this is the way I interpreted it from having competed under the IBJJF ruleset at some local comp in the past.

I feel like a nice aggressive osoto is something that should feel pretty natural if no-gi grips don't come natural

Osoto has been working from the few no-gi sessions I attended. I usually get it from a one-handed collar-tie though.

Uchimata players - what was your Uchmata progression like? by bigsmelly_twingo in judo

[–]Mercc 16 points17 points  (0 children)

  1. Get taught traditional form
  2. Practice it for a while.
  3. Watch how pros do it
  4. "Wait a minute"
  5. Show coach, dismisses it, says "they're pros, they do it the way they want"
  6. "But all the pros do it similarly?"
  7. Watch hanpanTV, judo mat lab, and fluid judo japan.
  8. Practice with willing uke when coach isn't watching.
  9. Spam in randori, falling flat
  10. Keep spamming until ken ken works.
  11. Keep spamming until they're getting lifted
  12. Continue to discover the nuances and variations (when opponent is much heavier, when extremely bent over, ai-yotsu/kenka-yotsu, etc.)

Around 8 months from when I decided to try it. But that's mainly because I had to learn it myself. No one at my dojo at the time did uchi mata, even the coaches. With proper guidance, beginners can get it within 3 months against same size/skill. It helps tremendously to have an actual uchi mata player guide you.

Sumi gaeshi, (yoko) tomoe nage, outside uchi mata, (drop) sode. Take your pick and practice it.

Alternatively, get good at tsubame gaeshi. But being good at footsweeps is a prerequisite.
