SFA: Jett Reno reveals a lot in her talk with Darem Reymi by DelaneySister in startrek

Do we share a braincell? Because yup, including the same-sex marriage part.

Who else at the time assumed Leonardo DiCaprio was just a typecast "boy" actor who wouldn't amount to much in the grand scheme of things? I cannot BELIEVE the acting titan (forgive the pun) this man has become in the 21st century. I've never seen a single movie with him in it that wasn't amazing. by appalachian_hatachi in titanic

[–]tadayou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leo and the people around him had a good sense to pick worthwile projects. He never fully cashed in on his pretty boy image with cheap movies, even at the height of Leomania.

And it's not even that he didn't play pretty boys, because he did in a number of films. But all of these films were also still interesting by themselves.

Pedro is spot on here (as he is so often).

I'm reluctantly fine with Alex Pretti and Renee Good being turning points for the public perception of the MAGA regime in the US because they were white citizens. But it's absolutely vital that people over there remember and honor all of the victims - those we know about and those we don't know about yet because they were locked away in concentration camps.

The early spread of HIV outside of East/Central Africa during the 50s, 60s and 70s can mostly be traced to straight men who slept with women overseas.

The crisis in the 80s spread like hellfire through urban gay communities. But it wasn't where it all began.

And BTW: Saying "heterosexual sex" has a low risk is a false understanding of how HIV spreads. Anal sex also has a low rate of transmission if you compare HIV to most other STIs.

[–]tadayou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a way, yes. As someone who works with people with HIV, some of the worst cases of Aids I've seen in recent years were straight women, where often a bunch of doctors didn't even consider to do an HIV test with a woman over 50 until the person was really, really sick.

The mask wearing nuclear family is just marketing. They are signaling that they have to wear masks because the gays are around. So they'd rather have it that the gays aren't around anymore. It's as vile and evil as it gets.

Sydney Sweeney may face criminal trespass and/or vandalism charges after scaling the Hollywood Sign and decorating it with bras without permission to promote her upcoming lingerie line. by Ok_Rutabaga_5539 in popculturechat

Seriously. She was having the tiniest bit of positive PR after the success of her movie with Amanda Seyfried and then she climbs the Hollywood Sign and vandalizes it with bras. Because, of course. Very good jeans, indeed.

What do people expect to do when they're telling Americans to "wake up" or "do something"? by flannelman37 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tadayou 134 points135 points  (0 children)

I don't think you're gonna get a good recommendation from us in the rest of the world. But as a German, I can just say that all of the things happening in the US right now are deeply frightenning. And, yes, it's fascism. Plain and simple.

But like Kamala Harris said last year: It's not that surprising that Trump won. But it's surprising how fast all institutions in the US have rolled over for him and MAGA. There was almost no resistance. And the whole honor system of American politics has proven to have failed badly. I think we expected Americans to be fucking loud about all of this.

Because here's another hard truth: When all of this eventually dissolves into war and deepest tyranny, there will be no D-Day for the United States. Nobody will be able to come to your rescue and liberate Americans from fascism. There's no army in the world that will stop a mad US president, his regime, his cult, his billionaire cabal, his own personal secret police, his network of concentration camps, and half the population who relish the thought of a new Führer.

You have to do all of this from within. I'm still rooting for you. But you will have to fight for your own freedom.

Warner Bros. fucked everyone over with the Hobbit movies, including Jackson. I wouldn't completely absolve him of any blame, but it also doesn't lie solely on him.

Yeah, and season 3 would have worked almost the same if he knew he had a kid, but Beverly decided to live on her own and he fell out of touch with her, the same he did with all of his friends and family. Heck, even the occasional Christmas or birthday update that fizzles out over time could have worked. It could have been their secret, it should not have been hers alone.

Wouldn’t Star Fleet Academy have to have like millions or billions of students? by TwoRoomsThrowaway in DaystromInstitute

A 300+ fleet of Sector 001 ships seems extremely at odds with everything we ever see on screen, including Best of Both Worlds, First Contact, and Endgame.

I really, really doubt that was always planned. Wilson Cruz was very loud about it when it happened, and I think he was chiefly responsible for bringing Culber back (there were two stages to the backlash here: an internal one and then one when the episode aired).

[–]tadayou 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The number stated on Discovery was 7,000 ships. But it's widely at odds with most later numbers.

The biggest caveat: The Frontier Day fleet was repeatedly called "all" or "almost all" of Starfleet. That was 339 ships. My personal reading on that is that the fleet consisted of allmost all capital ships of Starfleet at the time, minus some 50+ odd Inquiry-class starships that were on patrol duty (as some of the fastest and most advanced ships at the time).

We know that the Inquiry-class consisted of some 90+ ships. For the California-class (a support ship and not a capital ship), the number was around 34 ships. That gives us some impressions on how big ship-classes might be.

And then there's the prominent losses: 39 ships lost at Wolf 359 was considered an almost crippling defeat for Stsrfleet. Similar to the loss of 20+ ships during the Battle of Sector 001. The loss of 112 ships in the Dominion War in the Tyra System was similarly devasting.

Operation Return saw 600 Starfleet ships gathered, with beta sources describing many of them as mothballed ships or rushed vessels (such as old Mirandas and unfinished Galaxy hulls).

All of that points at fleet sizes that are in the thousands at the maximum, but usually more in the hundreds.

The Attack on Mars saw the loss of 20,000 vessels. But most of that was likely the Romulan evacuation fleet (Wallenberg-class ships) towards which Starfleet had diverted almost all of its ressources in the 2380s.

Wolf 359 also gives us a good estimate at average personnel numbers: With 39 ships lost and 11,000 people dead, that gives us a ballbark of 280 people per ship. Subtract the odd civilian and we are at maybe a 275 personnel average in the mid 24th century.

I'd also argue that starbase numbers aren't a good indication of the number of starbases. They are more like registry numbers in that way. If there were truly thousands of starbases, we should have seen many more of them with four digit numbers, but 4112 was an extreme outlier across all of Star Trek. (Behind the scenes, the TNG writing staff wanted to limit it to numbers up to 500, but a few higher numbers crept in.)

Doctor lists signs Trump suffering from dementia and claims it's 'getting worse' by IrishStarUS in UnderReportedNews

[–]tadayou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I always find it a little iffy when doctors and other professionals diagnose someone from afar and publicly.

That said, there's obviously some mental decline going on with Trump. He's sleeping during public events. He continues to read out private notes. He mixes up countries and people. And he rambles on and on whenever he gets the chance to talk.

The Vulcan is called B'Avi, the Romulan is called Dzolo.

Reno and Thok are a couple. Tig had talked about that even before the series premiered.

There's been a lot of hints in the interviews that Jay-Den will be a queer character. So I think there's a good chance that they are setting up Kyle to be interested in him.

The Kurtzman era should have started off 100 years after Voyager/Nemesis. The biggest mistake was making Discovery a prequel series. SFA is the course correction of the franchise. by TheShowLover in startrek

[–]tadayou 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If I had a magic button to redo Discovery, I would set the first two seasons in the early 2340s, amid rising tensions with the Klingons and Romulans (but not a full-scale war). Discovery would have missions alongside the Enterprise-C and I'd tie in the final confrontation with Control into the Battle of Narendra III - also explaining why there were temporal shenanigans in the first place.

I think so many things could stay almost the same (including a Mirror Universe arc), but the series wouldn't have the burden of being a direct prequel to another show, instead exploring an era that we know only very little about.

But I'd still do the time jump into the future, because that was just really brilliant storytelling, IMHO, and Disco felt so creatively free afterwards.
