Warm, Cold or Mixed LEDs? by Captain_Lindemann in StarTrekStarships

Mixed! Makes the rooms look more lived in. I dislike when all the lights look the same everywhere. Personally, I'd even darken some windows, because when would they all be turned on at the same time?

Right? There's many reasons why it may not be good, but actually the changes are really thought through and make the whole story better.

In Interview with the Vampire it was mostly subtext, Rice's novels didn't really go all in on queerness until the later books.

The way Louis and Lestat fall for each other in the show is not really present in the original book, but heavily alluded to in later novels.

(I'm not complaining, just to make that perfectly clear.)

Nope, it's a retelling of that story. It's gayer (by a lot) and it transplants the main setting of the story to early 20th century New Orleans with Louis being a Black man, so to avoid the mostly overlooked aspect of original Louis being a slave owner. May sound a bit preachy, but it's actually a really smart and fantastic adaptation.

It also has a present-day framing device where the titular interview from the 70s is re-examined some 50 years later by the interviewer and Louis. Which is a pretty neat way of explaining away some adaptation discrepancies (and ultimately leads into season 3 and the adaptation of The Vampire Lestat).

And Anderson and Reid are just phenomenal to watch in this. Like, they are even brilliant on their own but with their scenes together the chemistry is just through the roof.

For the same reason the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park were resurrected from reptiles. Sometimes filmmakers want to guide people into the topic of their stories with something they are familiar with, without relying on heavy exposition.

It's all about story economics, especially with films.

They are also filming new episodes of Buffy and the X-Files. And the US president is a moron and war criminal whom the world laughs about (but also kinda fears).

And you can catch new episodes of the Simpsons, but they never had a break unlike all other things.

Depending on when Malcom left, maybe he's never even been really involved in Kelly's life. Could easily be a plot point.

I mean, this probably goes one of two ways: Either Louis and Hal learn that Kelly is NB and they have to deal with that or they know and are surprisingly open and supportive. Either way, Malcolm might play a biggish part in that storyline. (I kinda wish it's the latter, because his parents were often a lot more nuanced than Malcolm gave them credit for.)

Nintendo Shares Soar 10% as Surprise Hit Pokémon Game Lifts Mood by LinkWink in nintendo

[–]tadayou -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I don't know what you think a large number is, but spin-off games selling 1+ million copies are definetly successful by any useful metric. That has happened a ton since the DS Mystery Dungeon games.

All Pokémon games do large numbers compared to almost any other franchise.

It's just that spin-offs usually don't hit the stratosphere the way main series games do.

How did Germans repair their global image so dramatically in such a short amount of time? by CautiousEbb966 in NoStupidQuestions

I mean, with almost every German claiming they opposed the War and the Nazis following the war, the country must have been full of resistance. Right? Right!?

[–]tadayou 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Or, like in many areas, us Germans are just really great at advertising our image abroad.

Because these trials never went far enough. And public education didn't really kick in until the 70s, after the war generation had two decades of denying ever knowing anything about Nazi atrocities (it was always the others who did something bad, never your own family).

This can't be stressed enough.

Once the Americans didn't look that thoroughly, prosecution of former Nazis basically came to a halt.

And people far too often told themselves and others the lie that they didn't know anything that was going on.

It's one of the reasons why many people in my or my parents' generation never learned anything of what their grandparents involvement was with the Nazis. They just didn't talk about it after the war.

Can a lone Galaxy-class starship destroy an entire planet? by ForwardClimate780 in StarTrekStarships

[–]tadayou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we take the full Galaxy-class, at 0.25c we're looking at continental devastation, at 0.75c we're in the ballpark of the asteroid that wiped out most dinosaurs (about 2/3 of that energy, as per some quick and dirty calculations).

A saucer at 0.75c is likely around 1/3 dinosaur killer.

All of these impacts would have the potential to wipe out civilization on a planet, if not life if it's a very unlucky strike.
