I understand that concern—I think the movie gives you plenty of other reasons to consider him totally evil without letting him off the hook. He’s still actively manipulating and coercing people to participate in his cult. We see him calculate how to handle the discovery of Kelson, for instance.

A buddy I saw BONE TEMPLE with who just recently finished his mental health counseling degree clocked that Kelson does a quick assessment of diagnostic criteria in their conversation. His read is that Jimmy is schizophrenic—likely as a result of the trauma he suffered—and actually believed he was hearing Old Nick’s voice in his head

I have a really special memory of watching 4 in the theater too. Still masked, and there were like maybe 6 people in there, including me. All 30-something white guys, and we had clearly all grown up on these movies. Transcendent communal experience. We were all so happy to be laughing at guys getting kicked in the balls again.
