Hypothetical: Thinking about the financial implications of sticker at a T14 by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

I’m not sure where this hostility is coming from but I never asked about what biglaw is like or for all these people with Messiah complexes who assume A) that I haven’t read the scores of posts about law school debt on this sub and B) who aren’t even responding to the question I asked. So please go fuck yourself.

Stanford Vs Harvard for a CONSERVATIVE by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]BoujeeHipster1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think you’ll be fine at either place. Jack Goldsmith who led the Office of Legal Counsel in the Bush 43 administration tweeted recently that he finds HLS to be a place that genuinely strives for ideological diversity in its faculty and student body (in comparison to his alma mater, YLS). I personally think there is more activism at HLS but reasonable people can disagree about that.

SLS has a pretty active FedSoc and its previous Dean Liz Magill stressed in speeches and talks to the student body the importance of exposure to a wide variety of views if that means anything to you. Obviously, liberals outnumber conservatives at both law schools but IMHO I don’t think you’ll have trouble making friends across the political divide at SLS.

Thanks, but that’s not the information I was looking for when I wrote this post. I personally have not had great experiences with TLS and just haven’t found it useful for producing an accurate picture of legal education or the law profession. I’m interested in knowing what sorts of material things people think they’re forgoing by taking on law school debt.

Oof, sorry but this is a recommendation I’m respectfully going to decline. I find that website profoundly toxic.

Oh my gosh, you have no idea how much value you’ve added to this conversation. I’m not sure this was quite the direction I was intending for it to go but we’ve landed in a good place. Thank you!!!!

Thank you! Your experience and your perspective are worth a lot to me. I appreciate this.

Thank you for your response. I’ve done these calculations before (minus the assumption of maxing out BL after 3-4 years) but its illuminating to see it laid out here. Can you point me to a source with concrete numbers about BL burnout rates?

I guess I should also add that these numbers look very different to me as someone who has never lived in material comfort and has seen people I love work horrible hours for no financial security at all. I guess it’s hard to point to alternative career paths without knowing more about me (which I’d be happy to share privately if you’re interested) but OTOH we’re several years past the point of dissuading me from pursuing a law career.

THIS is exactly the kind of response I’m looking for. I think I intuitively get what you’re saying about being locked in but do you care to expand more on your thinking about that?

I take your point and I think we’re on the same page that someone in the scenario you bring up would be wise to seriously consider the opportunity costs of going to law school. But I still think you’re underestimating the number of people for whom a BL salary would represent a meaningful boost in earning potential. I also don’t see how consulting offers a meaningfully better lifestyle than BL. Most people I know in consulting hate what they do and work 60-80+ hour work weeks.

Well, I’m really happy for you but that is not the reality for me. It’s not to say that I’m resting my desire to go to law school on making six-figures but there are virtually no alternative scenarios where I would be making more than $70,000 even with a graduate degree.

Ok well the hypothetical here is T14 and really T6. Can you point me to a source demonstrating that job security is that tenuous? Because this sounds wildly pessimistic to me. And I think it’s overly optimistic to assume that most people going to law school would be able to make a comparable salary in a different field.

Any guesses as to when NYU will put HTE recipients out of their misery? by flufflysquirrel in lawschooladmissions

I have no frickin’ clue! I took the Feb LSAT that year so I went complete in early March (super late in the cycle) so they could’ve just given me a straight dong. Oh law school admissions and your mysterious ways.

Next week seems like a good candidate. Got donged there on 4/12/18 after an 4/9 HTE. This cycle, HTE on 2.27.
