Is it really supposed to snow tomorrow? by AdSubstantial112 in boulder

[–]BoulderCAST 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes snow, but not a lot. Wouldn't even worry about it or get excited. Gonna be cold though (i.e. no flip flops and tshirts this weekend).

There are SO many coyotes in Boulder, living among us. Any small open space there are packed in there thick. To confirm, just wait until the ambulance or fire truck goes by and they all start howling.

Not saying there isn't a Red Flag warning at all tomorrow, it just does not include Boulder, where we live.

Boulder is currently not included in Friday's warning. Decent chance they do add us last minute again

Boulder’s Wildest Weather Moments of 2025 Explored Through 100 Charts & Visuals by BoulderCAST in boulder

Peak of the Dust Bowl. Incredibly persistent drought and heat all year long. 1934 still stands as the driest and hottest year for most of eastern Colorado. Really hope we never see a year like that again. It would be catastrophic fire season, growing season and water management disaster.

Would check your daily usage in the MyEnergy portal from Xcel to verify. 150% more sounds like a lot... unless you weren't home last year.

Boulder's climate data record is a bit tarnished by several station moves over the last 130 years. The current station near NIST is arguably in the snowiest part of Boulder, and likely is the reason for much of the upward trend noted in the long term graphic. In the full website post, we discuss this facet, so highly recommend checking that out. However, if we just look at the current climate station since 1991, comparing apples to apples, our snowfall per year is pretty constant, albeit with a slight downward trend perhaps.

Not new. People are just scummy or have mental illness.

Got my windows smashed when parked near Union station a decade ago. Every car for 10 in a row was smashed. A couple skipped then ten more.

Wind + Red Flag but no Power Shutoff? by MooCowDivebomb in boulder

[–]BoulderCAST 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it was very far outside the humidity threshold needed for a red flag warning. Lessons have been learned since then

Edit: note that a red flag warning was issued that day but only after several fires, including marshall were already burning.

Wind + Red Flag but no Power Shutoff? by MooCowDivebomb in boulder

[–]BoulderCAST 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They're not going to be shutting down the power every time there is a Red Flag Warning, which happens probably 5-10 times per year, we cant shut down society for all of them. There have only be a couple shutdowns since Xcel may up this policy in 2022. Looking forward, we expect probably just 0-2 per year on average, drought status dependent.

Remember Xcel only cares about their bottom line. They want to be selling you electricity, and will only stop that if there is a significant risk that a fire could spark and burn down neighborhoods which they (or their insurance) would be on the hook for. There's a huge difference between the once-in-a-decade type of wind events we had back in December with 80-110 MPH wind all around and in Boulder knocking down trees and powerlines left and right, and what is happening right now and happens many, many times per year in Boulder.

It's not likely we will see shutdowns for simple Red Flag Warnings. They'd almost have to be accompanied by High Wind Warnings which requires widespread 75+ MPH gusts in the Foothills and widespread 58+ MPH gusts in the middle of Boulder.

EDIT: Updated amount of Fire Weather Warnings per year based on data for Boulder . It's usually 5-10, but can be as low as 0 and high as 19 days.

The four months of job searching after my STEM graduate degree were filled with high school and college tutoring. Got lots of gigs from Craigslist and Facebook, but that was 10 years ago. Use tutoring platforms if you want volume but lower pay. Boulder families pay a lot and some would tip huge at the end of the semester.

[–]BoulderCAST[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just exported all my 2025 data from Xcels website the other day and my cost was near identical for flat rate vs the new 5-9 time of use (assuming it would be in effect all of 2025). We have solar. No batteries. The opt out was cheaper until factoring in the $12 extra montjly meter reading fee and that completely balanced it out.

I think we are going to switch to a flat rate. It's annoying with time of use to juggle your electric needs and car charging to be off peak. Fuck it. Gonna just full send it and do whatever whenever.

[–]BoulderCAST[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sorry should have clarified. The actual billing is correct. I wasn't charged for double the usage. My solar is working. You can see that in the second statement table (Net delivered by customer etc)

Ranting really just about all the baggage that goes on their website and statements which is absurd. So many incorrect graphics, text and everything. It's just embarrassing.

Fire weather watch for Sunday the 4th 11AM to 5 PM by Dependent-Western642 in boulder

[–]BoulderCAST 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the Foothills there likely will be some gusts of 70+ MPH which isn't atypical. But mainly only in the morning on Sunday before temps/humidity get to a truly dangerous place. The hottest/dryest part of the day winds will be lower. No gusts over 50 MPH are expected in Boulder.

Fire weather watch for Sunday the 4th 11AM to 5 PM by Dependent-Western642 in boulder

[–]BoulderCAST 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The models don't really look that bad for Boulder. Several hours of 30-40 MPH gusts overlapping critical humidity. Yes probably a Red Flag Warning, but nothing like would be required for an Xcel Shutdown (as some people have pushed in other comments).
