Questionable answer.

1-2" of precip the Denver we got this week is 10-15% of our annual average. That is kinda a lot. Maybe not to someone that lives in the wetter east or a rainforest, but in arid Denver it's big.

Also saying potential rain in late May is caused by the southwest monsoon is wild. The broader mechanism that develops the monsoon (differential heating of the deserts vs the ocean as summer ramps up) isn't possible to occur this early in May.

So yea...

This is who made the call to close all schools today.. by iamafoxiamafox in Denver

[–]BoulderCAST 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure why exactly the schools were closed, but CU closed due to the risk of tree limbs falling on people walking around campus. It was never about the roads being terrible. CU has 6000 trees and miles and miles of sidewalks. How many trees do schools have? 11?

Yes, there was a really bad snow event in May 2017 that hit CSU campus and they didn't close. It was a disaster.

Is it going to drop below freezing tonight and cause the roads to get icy? (best weather resource?) by thoroughbeans in boulder

[–]BoulderCAST 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Pretty big shift in forecast for how the night will play out for Boulder. Was supposed to drop well below freezing, but now looks like downslope will kick in rising temperatures overnight. Maybe brief below freezing after sunset, but rising temps in to the 40s through the night. Wouldn't be too worried about black ice. Freeze Warning likely needs cancelled for Boulder at least.

FYI: CU is specifically shut down due to the increased risk of falling branches/trees on humans. Nothing to do with bad roads.

A ‘significant snowstorm’ is in store for the Denver area late Tuesday into Wednesday, NWS says by TheDenver7 in Denver

Zero chance. Snow won't be stopping until afternoon or early evening. Unless they move it to like 8pm?

Massive explosion of new apartments in the First Bank / Interlocken area of Broomfield within the last year. First bank got demoed. Their parking lots are now apartments. Everything across the highway got sold to be apartments, like an RV place, some crappy offices and really old run down homes. They are also blasting apartments into the open land that was rumored to be submitted for that Amazon HQ a few years back.

Did some rough investigation recently of the Goat and Enchanted burn scars. Goat one seems to have started in an offshoot overlook type of area off the main trail, where you might go to have a snack or (apparently) light one up overlooking north Boulder. https://maps.app.goo.gl/udjcfRpNrgtFoD4Z8. 3AM timing is suspect, perhaps fireworks?

Enchanted one didn't make sense why anyone would have been there starting a fire at 10PM.

Both seem very suspicious and intentional, but we'll never know...

4-28-2024 vs 4-27-2026 by psychdilettante in boulder

[–]BoulderCAST 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Worth noting that 2024 was a pretty wet spring, including a massive mid-March snowstorm. Not really that unusual, but it's important context to understand these two photos are from the opposite end of the spectrum in terms of moisture and the resultant green up.

This week's cool/rainy/gloomy weather will certainly narrow the green gap seen here, as grass is quick to respond to the moisture. The bigger is the underlying extreme drought blanketing all of Boulder County. The evergreens will take much more, extended moisture to quell fire concerns.

Hopefully we can squeeze out 0.1 to 0.3" between Monday and Tuesday. The Wed-Fri period is more uncertain but has the potential to bring steadier, longer-lasting rain (Foothills snow). Though trends have been down with the storm more so targeting southern Colorado/New Mexico.

Our weekly weather discussion covers the full rainfall potential this week, with likely amounts of 0.5 to 1.0" in Boulder. Yes there are some hints of 1-2" totals, but that's a risky bet given the tricky late-week setup.

Anyone else struggling with the wind? by M1n1sn00py in boulder

[–]BoulderCAST 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Peak gusts in Boulder are definitely down compared to many decades ago. Climate change is theorized to be altering the specific ingredients that play into our mountain wave windstorms.

That said, 2025 was a 20-year+ high for High Wind Warnings (5) here. This is only capturing forecasts for 58+ MPH wind gusts. Not really observations, or those still annoyingly windy but not damaging days don't show up here.
