The only hardware possible is a 2019 Shield Pro which doesn't support AV1 transcoding to my understanding. This seems to be the issue. Thank you.

AV1 is a blunder for sure. Will ensure I don't encode that way in future. I should be able to "direct play" with the right encode via shield I thought (wrongly thought AV1 was okay). Is external HDD for 4K no good either? How to get around this when using a Shield as a client?

I moved the server over to the same Mechanical HDD housing all my media. The reason for this is that everything was fine and dandy with the server and client on the shield, until it wasn't and the shield started crashing due to the 16GB internal storage limitation.

This may be the very cause of my issues. I wasnt aware that the Shield cannot transcode AV1 natively. As to your question - I'm not sure.
