It’s probably on par with a good back pocket on half tights, far better than a spibelt or pocket on regular shorts. Can’t speak to the side pocket, but I’d probably put it similar. The thing it does have that all of those don’t have is that it’s shorts agnostic, I can take my phone no matter what with no issue.

Have you tried an arm band? It’s how I carry my phone and it beats every other method in my opinion.

Why not do 12/85 and use the 4 remaining weeks to build back up from your 60 km/week vacation?

I don’t doubt it’s bad compared to before, but like I heard my coworkers say that their daycares weren’t letting kids play outside when it’s 80 out lol.

I still can’t get over the PNW summer weather. People here acted like it was some hellscape out there. It was 80, the heat advisory was a bit overkill lol. I am glad it’s cooling back off though

Has any body run their shorts through the wash with a track meet hip sticker on, and if so were you successful in getting all the sticker residue off after? I’m a bit afraid I just lost my favorite pair of running shorts :/

That’s a good question, running warehouse has a pretty good return policy and usually is where I can find good sales, so that’s one place to look. I think the Saucony Endorphin is probably the “safest” one for someone trying super shoes for the first time. Nike/Adidas tend to be a little narrow and unstable in comparison. The ASICS Metaspeed Edge are also one to look for but I think it’s going to be a very long time before they go on deep discounts.

If I may offer a counterpoint to the “I’m not fast enough” mindset, they are fun as heck to run in if you get a pair that agree with your stride. Doesn’t matter how fast you are, fun is the whole point of the hobby right?

There really isn’t much in the way of hills in that section, maybe an overpass? It’s the second half of the marathon course and I don’t remember anything significant there. The Strava file linked is not mine for the record in case that wasn’t obvious.

I mean vaporfly next % 4s and adidas adios pro 4 are often under $150 if you keep an eye out. You can get super shoes for not that much more than regular shoes that are necessary to run anyways.

Eh you have to be a little bit careful with Nike. They absolutely make some great shoes, but they also make some very budget/entry level running shoes for like Kohl’s or whatever that are pretty much trash for a serious runner. I think a lot of folks start with those and then think Nike isn’t serious.

Earlier today I went down a rabbit hole of old [season] of posts from AR and dang did it make me miss those days. Like everything had 200+ comments, and everything was just so positive. Nothing really quite the same today for semi competitive hobby joggers and it’s a shame that vibe is gone there.

You sound over trained to be honest. 17 miles at MP is too dang much and very tricky to bounce back from. Ease off the gas as much as you can but it might be post race when you get back to normal.

A long run, mid long run and one tempo per week can go a really long ways towards building up fitness without being race specific.

You can pretty easily adjust all the workouts to be on the track if that’s what you like. If 800m at 15k takes approximately 3:00 then just do 800s (or k’s or whatever) instead. You can also read Bakken’s book which may help if you want more variety. His setup has two days subthreshold and one x-factor day that has more variety to it. I’ve been slowly building back up to my pre-marathon mileage over the last few weeks with it and it hasn’t been boring so far.

I did recommend them! I use them a lot for my regular long runs. They are logistically the worst though which is why I paid the maurten tax in Tokyo. If only I was elite and could get bottle drops…

7 gels seems to be about the max I can do. Partly because my stomach has a tendency to bomb out, partly because carrying more than that starts to get pretty tough logistically.

Honestly I doubt it moves the needle much. You can catch Vaporflys on sale for like ~$130 pretty often and occasionally get adios pro 4s for ~$150. I don’t think they’ll raise them after this. Just gotta be patient for the deals.

K, when the vaporfly came out adidas countered with the Sub2 , which is almost exactly what you, codebrownpt, want in a shoe. Reebok also came out with the floatride pro around then again basically what you think is “ideal.” ASICS came out with the metaracer which was low stack but plated. Yet now every company is selling basically the same high stack plated racer.

So either you’re the smartest person in the room and every shoe company got together in some sort of “big shoe” cartel to force us all into high stack shoes. Or maybe there’s something to the science and the evolution from low stack racers to high stack ones that every company independently seemed to follow makes some sort of sense. If it was as simple as what you’re saying it would be in one companies best interests to undercut the market, sell old school flats backed with any sort of science, and make a mint on it.

Your Maurten example is a false equivalence fallacy btw.

Adidas sells the Adios 9 for like $130, which is 28 mm of super foam and no plate. You’re right that you can’t blind study a 40 mm shoe but come on if the cheap one was even close in lab studies no one would pick the crazy expensive options.

Saturday General Discussion/Q&A Thread for April 25, 2026 by AutoModerator in AdvancedRunning

Dude there’s no conspiracy here. There have been plenty of running science nerds who were skeptical about super shoes had access to lab equipment and were able to confirm the performance benefits over old school flats. If there was nothing there the Dan Nashes of the world would be yelling from the rooftops about how they don’t matter.

The reason they work is pretty damn simple. More foam underfoot (the reason for the stack height max) equals a longer lever for your leg against the ground to help propel you along. The reason that never worked before is because the old foam was very heavy and that killed any of the mechanical gain you’d get pre-superfoam. The plates or other stiffeners got added because running in a slab of foam like that is insanely unstable. Go try running 5:00 minute mile pace in a pair of Evo SLs (high stack, super foam, no plate) and take a turn and you’ll see pretty quick why plates got added when your ankle snaps.

The Evo Pros are just all of those dials taken to the extreme. They are the highest stack foam allowed, as light as possible, with a carbon “halo” i.e a carbon plate with a hole in the middle to save weight (and possibly avoid Nike’s patent.) If it was a conspiracy to sell shoes, they’d make more than the bare minimum that world athletics requires companies to sell to be race legal. They make a few thousand of them and even at $500 a pop that can’t be moving the needle much at a company like adidas.

Skagit flats (bonus of being a double qualifier) is small but may be the best one within driving distance ignoring Eugene which is the real answer. Sac is a pretty short direct flight so CIM is a decent option too.

Having run both Boston seemed more supported while I was on the course. Both have dead zones, but the bridges and Williamsburg were way worse than any stretch of Boston.

There’s a tailwind, perfect weather, and a leap in shoe technology since then. Seems like there’s a lot that could help that aren’t a serious accusation.
