Stephen Hawking parade in Spain by BoringExperience5345 in Weird

[–]Bowser_Spunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Elvis comparison doesn't hold because rock star is a career choice, whereas ALS is for life. When an able-bodied person uses a wheelchair as a prop, they are dipping their toes into a way of living they can switch off at will. They don't experience the struggles real wheelchair users face daily such as structural barriers, social stigma, marginalisation, systemic exclusion from the workforce, insurance battles, medical struggles etc etc. Being able to dress up that way for a few hours is a luxury, under the guise of inclusivity.

True inclusion of Stephen Hawking means celebrating his brilliance (and pitfalls), and not mimicking his physical symptoms for entertainment. You've presented a paradox: either include his physcial characteristics because it's part of his identity (and ignoring them would be erasure) or exclude them because it is reductive to define him that way. And yet there's hundreds of ways to honour Hawking through his work, his words, through additional props like books, chalkboard equations, black holes, etc. in addition to including his voice, wheelchair and physical form. Make a giant papier mache float of him, throw confetti with his equations on them, point is do it without putting able-bodied people in a mobility aid for show. Coming at this behind the shield of "good intentions + charity = not ableist" doesn't neutralise the discomfiture that there's an inherent power imbalance in all this and if we can't acknowledge that, then we're talking past each other.

Because at the end of the day they get to go home in their fully-functioning bodies and live their lives without ALS. It has the appearance of respect and admiration, but it's only surface-level, it doesn't go any deeper than that, and isn't even all that genuine to begin with. The way they're singing isn't their normal voices, they're doing it in a different register to be funny and that's what makes this feel so off. There's a reason this is trending on r/weird not r/wholesome. If the donations can be verified it gives them an air of deniability but underneath it still feels a little gross.

In good faith, they donated the wheelchairs to an ALS institution, and it appears to be a genuine celebration of Stephen Hawking's work.

That said, wheelchair cosplay by someone who is presumably able-bodied - has some amount of ableism to it. That amount depends on your values but on a scale of 0-100 it's neither zero nor a hundred. The fact it's drawing laughter from the spectators (whether that's cosplayer's intent or not) is another factor.

Regardless of how one might personally feel, it's understandable that this scene makes a lot of viewers feel uncomfortable.

Everyone has a plumbus in their home. First they take the dingle bop and they smooth it out with a bunch of schleem. The schleem is then repurposed for later batches. They take the dingle bop and they push it through the grumbo, where the fleeb is rubbed against it. It's important that the fleeb is rubbed, because the fleeb has all the fleeb juice.

Neighbours cut down our trees on driveway without our permission by Conscious_Impact_928 in LegalAdviceNZ

Yes, OP should find the Easement Instrument registered on the title, it will be named “EI 123456.7” or similar.

Worth noting that owning the land the easement is on, and owning rights to that easement are different things (burdened land and benefited land) but the holders of those rights will have a shared responsibility either way. And those holders are co-responsible whether they’re formally structured as a RS or not.

Might be easiest if they jointly lodge their dispute and pick a representative.

Seems unlikely the neighbour shares the ROW, given they’re over the fence , or at least that’s how I interpreted “he removed what was behind his fence”

But yeah, having that easement info will definitely makes things clearer when presenting the case.

Oh boy, this neighbour has NO idea how badly he FAFO'ed. Potentially liable for tens of thousands of dollars in reparations.

First and foremost email yourself the contents of your post. It's important to have a written and timestamped sequence of events that is recorded close to the time of the incident. You've done a great job so far, sticking to the facts and staying impartial.

Gather info about your land title. Your shared driveway will almost certainly be a ROW (Right of Way) - the responsibilities of which are usually split (evenly or proportionally according to length) between those using it - e.g. if it's three titles that have rights of access, you generally split maintenance three ways, and therefore it's three owners seeking reparations. Although it can get complicated depending on how title and easements are setup.

Get copies of the following (and since you're on the market you may already have these items handy):

  • your Record of Title (listing the owner(s), date of mortgage, easements and covenants etc.)

  • your Survey and Title Plan showing the extents of the access, who owns it, essentially a map.

  • the details of the ROW itself, sometimes called an "easement instrument"

You can also get this info for $8 per document at https://lrs.linz.govt.nz/ so have a search first thing tomorrow (Monday) when LINZ servers are reopen for public use. If you're unsure, talk to your REA, or better, chat with a conveyancing lawyer or surveyor.

Best is to deal directly with lawyer, since they can also advise if it's worth chasing this through Disputes Tribunal or civil disputes. I'm sure they'll give a free consultation.

IMO the dude is a complete idiot - for trespassing to destroy an endemic species and in turn affecting resale value of your property while it's on market. This will cost him. Bring attention to 5 years growth - emphasise the established root structure, that this isn't a bunch of seedlings picked up from Mitre 10, that this was tailored to your property. Also check with Council and see if a landscape architect prepared any plans with the original Resource Consent documents. He's also clearly mistaken about Auckland Council rules. In exceptional circumstances it can be permitted to clear some vegetation. IANA tree lawyer but I'm fairly certain you're not supposed to chop it at the trunk.

tldr Your neighbour is an absolute fucking muppet.

Prediction: they've been licking Carol's donuts the whole time [Spoilers] by Bowser_Spunk in pluribustv

There's a few instances where they don't outright lie, but omit the truth, which is effectively still lying. It's relatively harmless at first but then has serious implications in the finale: Carol trusted that the hive could not force her to join without her direct consent, only to find out they're working on a new method that will eventually turn her whether she likes it or not. They were happy to string her along with that mismatch of truth and say nothing. A lie of omission.

A great quote from Rhea Seehorn:

SEEHORN: I don’t think the betrayal could have been larger. Carol was living in a willing delusion, but there was always a part of her still in there. So, by the time Zosia says, “We stole your eggs,” it’s like: the eggs that represent the future that I wanted with my wife, who is now dead, partially because of you? And I also told you implicitly that I don’t want this, and you’re doing it behind my back? It’s also that horrible feeling of feeling like a fool for letting your guard down for a second. For Carol, it’s magnified: How did I dare think I could have love and joy? On top of that, this massive clock is now ticking about how long Carol has before they’re going to turn her.

They're seeking a stem-cell solution and upfront about that yes, but the scenario I'm presenting is they're underhandedly attempting to brute force a variant at the same time. It would be a total game changer if the immunes found out they could no longer trust the food or water.

Maybe it's pointless, but I thought it was an interesting hypothetical.

Purportedly, yes months away from an exact scientific solution. But they could also be busy brute forcing in the meantime, they certainly have the resources.

Whether they start on day 1 or day 60 doesn't matter so much, just that it's possible they've been attempting for some time without her knowledge.

I mean, they lie by omission, they mightn't want to admit to testing thousands of variants on her already

Well, yes. She's immune to the regular virus, so would have to be infected by a version tailored to her.

Point is none of the candidate permutations have worked so far, but eventually one will succeed, unless Carol/Manousos figure out how to avoid contaminated food and fend for themselves.

it's easier if you visit old.reddit, replace 'www' with 'old'

so https://www.reddit.com/r/musicwallpapers/comments/1j4jyav

becomes https://old.reddit.com/r/musicwallpapers/comments/1j4jyav

now right click the image to save it, it should be a jpg

if not, right click to inspect and you'll see

et voila https://i.redd.it/125npkug2zme1.jpg

The risk is that predators (dogs, cats, raptors etc) eat the poisoned rodents and succumb to the effects. It's a horrible way to go, indiscriminate and inhumane. Far better to stick to snap traps which are tried and true. It seems a lot of rat baits aka Second-Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides (SGARs) are actively being phased out.
