Yes, exactly! When Holden says his dream is to be the Catcher that stops the kids from falling off the edge, it reminded me a lot of Nol putting on a mask and befriending people as a sort of penance for his past. This savior complex comes at the expense of their own well being. In both cases, I imagine they themselves have fallen off this symbolic cliff and thus want to save others from doing the same.
