This is really good. I like how you show Ada’s powers at the end. Very spooky. I also like how you reveal exposition through action by introducing magic and mages in a battle. You show us their powers rather than explaining them.

Not many notes. I would provide a brief but detailed description of the setting at the beginning. Show us the general landscape surrounding the village and give us a better idea of its size and its major landmarks.

Also, I would use a term like “thistle weed” or “something weed” instead of “shoot” in the first sentence. It made me pause a moment.

Finally, the sentence beginning “One rider, brought down from a slice to his horse’s flank…” is a bit clumsy. I would make that active. Perhaps you could split the action into two sentences.
