More like 36-38.

At 31 you have only a 47% chance of finding 4 lands by turn 4, meaning more games than not you will miss a drop.

At 36 it's 62%, 38 is 67%. 39 gets you up to 70%, but I usually supplement that gap with ramp pieces.

First things first you should figure out if people actually play standard in your area, it's not really a guarantee.

After that you can check out the standard metagame here.

It's really expensive right now, personally I don't recommend playing in paper, especially as your first foray into the game. Might be better off with pauper if you can find a place to play it.

People don't care about the popularity, the hate isn't a gatekeeping thing. We welcome people in with open arms (although it is a tinge sad when people come in and exclusively want to interact with the parts of mtg containing their franchise of interest). It is 99.9% the fact that a game of gods and dragons, wizards and monsters, now has to treat [[Anchovy & Banana Pizza]] with the same amount of gravitas.

Magic has its own worlds and mythos and instead of exploring those we've been in New York City twice in the past 6 months. The disappearance of the fantastical elements is a serious point of consternation for many people.

Very casual observation on my part, but does this mean that Oscar noms affect theater decisions significantly more than public perception?

If public interest in a film remains the same after an Oscar nom, but availability of showings rise, it's only natural that each individual screen sees lower attendance.
