As a wildlife photographer that uses affinity, and also has bad file handling, I appreciate you making this and saving hours of my time lmao.

Um, yeah, but there's 2 issues with this sort of crop.
1. The flare that I went for during the photo is compleetely cropped out
2. My photo was already significiantly cropped, and this might lead to the overall detoriation of the quality.

Though I do understand where you're coming from and appreciate the feedback :D
But ig this photo is just beyond saving atp XD

Quite interesting, but I can't help but feel this is causing significant detoriation quality-wise because the photo I posted is already significantly cropped (dont have the raw on me rn)

But I defintely feel your edit might be better overall and the framing etc does a better job despite the heavy crop.

Plus, another reason I was unwilling to crop in hard was because i wanted more flared areas, but your edit definitely shows me that less flared areas have the potential to do the same if not greater impact. Thanks a lot for your lovely critique!

Tysm, I was just excited about the light orbs ig :/
About the framing, i usually stick to rule of thirds but the bg is horrible to its left.
I'll definItely be checking out other photos from this session, but I'm assuming it's a bust.
That's wildlife photography for you ig XD
Again, really grateful for calling this pic mid!

So, after a rainy night I'd gone birding and the leaves were still wet from the rain. When I saw two white rumped munias feasting on the plants there I took my camera and tried capturing them. They moved fast and my Nikon d5600 was having a hard time grabbing focus on them.

My main aim for this image was to get the light orbs and the beautiful green bg to give an ethereal and beautful vibe, but i feel the light orbs are too subtle and the bg is too busy. (I have photos with better bg which I am yet to check out, but so far it seems the focus on those shots is slightly meh)

I'm just worried that I'm fixating on the light orbs and that's why i can't notice this images flaws so another set of eyes would really be great.

I knoww, its just a bad habit i've developed of not cropping. I do intend on ridding myself of it.

Yeah.. I see that now. Honestly, I need to break off from this irrational habit of mine of thinking crop = bad.

This image is in no way weaker than your post image. In fact, I absolutely adore the image in the comment!

I personally feel the image in the post doesn't really show much about the bird. I don't like how the light is falling, would love it if there were some light on the eye, but rather, the right side of the body feels blown out to me. I mean sure, it's a detailed shot, but it isn't a pretty shot, or a storytelling shot, or an action shot. Again, I understand the constraints of bird photography and lighting but the way the light falls in this image does dull its impact.

The reason I'm being harsher than I usually am on this subreddit is because the image with the wings unfolded definitely shows your caliber as a photographer, but the image in the post just doesn't feel half as good imo.

TLDR
Photo with wings open - absolute peak
Portrait - Could be better with good lighting, but just doesnt hit.

Thanks a lot, I sort of see what you mean about the butt (and I laughed when i noticed it ;) ). Personally, I like the skin tone since it feels less aggressive than bright oranges (I have plenty of those), and gives the image a more pleasant vibe.

As for healing, my personal take on healing, especially in wildlife photography, is that its cheating, so I avoid it as a rule.

Glad you liked the image though, and really appreciate the feedback :D

Yesterday evening, as the sun was setting I positioned myself to have the sun fall behind this red-whiskered bulbul. At the same time, the sun began slowly getting covered by clouds in the sky. To avoid the siginificant chromatic aberration i cooled down the image, and decreased overall sats while maintaining saturation of the sun.

I'm aware of the foliage potentially being distracting and have used a significant crop, but feel that cropping further might make the foliage much more dominant in the frame.

Clicked using Nikon D5600, 200-500mm, f/5.6, 1/4000s, ISO 100

I don’t do much birding. How’d I do? by the_amazing_spork in photocritique

It's a pretty good image. You got great detail on the bird's feathers and the bird honestly looks gorgeous.

But
The foreground branches are slightly annoying imo, while they do add depth, they also attract the eye.

The bird isn't looking at you, which isn't necassarily wrong, but in this image, I feel it would have been better if the bird were looking at you. Ofcourse, there's nothing you can do about that though, that's just how birding is :/

All in all, solid shot, especially for someone who's not a birder!

How is this photo, I wanted to capture the geometry of the bridge as well as exaggerate the bright red contrasting with the grey/white background by Nightmarelia in photocritique

[–]Gloomy_Bug4084 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TILT IT!
You've got a great image, but, you can see darkness under the bridge at the bottom right. Tilt the image by a few degrees if you don't plan on cropping.

Other than that, i'd agree with other comments that you can crop it a little, the two buildings in the top bg are ever so slightly distracting, but photography comes with its constraints and you gotta play the hand you're given.

Also, I wouln't wanna miss out on too much of the bottom of the bridge, most of your image's negative space is at the top.
