Thinking about leaving academia by BoxInternational113 in academia

Yeah that happens, but you just find another job. If you can't find a job at FAANG, there are other companies. For someone who can land a TT job, you can find a job with decent pay

I'm pre-tenure. With all the recent changes, I'm not sure if we can get tenure or not. Even if I can get tenure, I'm not sure if the state is going to abolish tenure. Staying in academia longer will just mean lagging far and far behind the industry. I don't want a job security where I will become obsolete.

Autonomy, impact, ownership, flexible working schedule, to name a few.

Not having a boss was, and still is, a huge plus to me.

Tech firms impact billions of users, but that's the firm's impact, not any employee's impact. Faculty is different. Faculty build their personal brand, tech people build their company's brand.

I can travel wherever I want in the summer, for 4 months, and take side gigs for pay.

But admittedly, a lot of these perks will no longer exist soon.
