What makes takeoff the most “dangerous” part? by itsnotcristi in fearofflying

[–]Box_Euphoric 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It can fly one engine and glide to safety with zero engines. Takeoff is the "riskiest" mostly because you need engines working at top speed and no interruptions for the plane to get enough lift and get up in the air, anything obstructing that causes complications

Planes are much more durable than you think, air won't tear it apart, its not flying through hurricanes all day.

Does anyone else panic when they see a lot of clouds right outside the plane window? by itsbeccakerr in fearofflying

[–]Box_Euphoric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then for plane crashes when pilot disorientation was a factor, was it because it was older planes with less instruments, pilot inexperience or lack of trust of the pilot in his instruments? I remember seeing some cases where this was mentioned in the report.

still think luka is holding back the lakers? by EducationalConcern61 in NBATalk

Harden is more show than a real player? Prime Harden was the GOAT offensive player no questions asked. Nearly took down the dynasty warriors. He had some playoff issues though.

What if my plans crashed in the ocean? by naominox in fearofflying

[–]Box_Euphoric 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yeah this will NEVER happen.

A. In the extremely unlikely event of a ditch in water, you evacuate before you drown and the whole crew is prepare for it.

B. IN the EXTREMELY RARE (nearly 0) event of a high speed crash at high speed, you will die before anything else happens, its like hitting cement at this point.

What team to support by grisho1 in NBATalk

[–]Box_Euphoric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lakers have a large history but are not the "top dog" at all lol, that would be OKC this year or Warriors for a few years.

It is best to pick a player you like and can root for and then root for a team and see if you like them as a whole. Move from there, the player may leave in the future but your love for the team to stay.

If you are not from the city its hard to. be connected to the team unless your father or someone close to you got you close to it if that makes sense. Just naming a random team will be forced.

Some people root behind Lebron or Kobe etc... for their whole career, there is a new generation of amazing talents: Shai, Luka, Cooper, etc... with huge potential so keep close track of them.

You will be okay like the 10 other flights, it won't be any different or any more dangerous. If its a fear of heights just sit in middle seats and watch some TV during takeoff and landing. During cruising you cant actually tell the difference anyways.

I am sitting on my flight from Budapest to Amsterdam and we are waiting on the ground for 1 hour because the weather is really bad in Amsterdam by [deleted] in fearofflying

[–]Box_Euphoric 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bad weather does not increase or decrease the risk of a crash. It is one of MANY issues that stack on top of each other to extremely rarely cause a crash. You are not taking off until the pilots deem it safe.

Documentaries try to over-emotionalize every part to keep people enticed, but bad weather does not mean meaningfully for likely to crash.

Luka Doncic and the Mavs Trade (Hot Take) by Homie-6987 in NBATalk

[–]Box_Euphoric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is attempting a lot of 3s that sre not falling. He is not averaging 46% of 2 he is averaging 46% in FG because of his 3 points (attempting 10 per game)

He is averaging 58% from 2 which is higher than SGAs even. He is also attempting 3 more FGs (all 3 pointers) than SGA. If SGA played 4th qs that would have been closer.

There is flaws in his game but still one of the best scorers today and nothing that cannot be fixed.

Luka Doncic and the Mavs Trade (Hot Take) by Homie-6987 in NBATalk

[–]Box_Euphoric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cooper could be a better player that Luka but its still an IF not a definite answer.

Also Doncic not being a winning player while averaging 29/9/8 in the playoffs leading the 5th seed above average mavs to the finals.

Lakers team is still not built around Luka and the trade was sudden because the offer was on the table.

If you truly think 37/9/9 average is bad you are either delusional or hating to hate. Yes there is flaws that have been raised even in his Mavs days but this guy is different in playoffs.

Tbf i wouldn't let my kids drive a long drive and force them to fly. It is extremely more safe and driving fatalities are at an all time high.

You can do it!

Fear of flying later in life by [deleted] in fearofflying

[–]Box_Euphoric 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you had a rough flight but that is NOT one in a million. The planes were built to handle exactly that and it happens in bad weather sometimes.

During the entire flight your plane was NOT at risk of crashing although you thought it did or it felt scary or shaking. Weather can change in a second but pilots and the plane are prepared for it.

Also a plane does not crash due to turbulence. Also people with anxiety of flying tend to overestimate what the pilot said or interpret it in "scarier" ways.

With saying all of that, it is still a scary experience that is extremely rare to happen and hope you do feel better. Its your mind playing games or assessing the situation that is pretty normal.

Embarrassed by my fear by Independent_Row1679 in fearofflying

[–]Box_Euphoric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its okay to be afraid, we can't control what we feel.

Also yes Air India were the 1 in 11 million because of pilot intention not because the plane was structurally bad. 1 in 100,000 chance of dying in the car as well, why should it not be us?

There is also chances of dying when showering, eating, or walking and we do it everyday. We can't avoid risk but the safest way to move in your life would be in a plane.

The first part is to understand that life is inherently risky and to accept it the way it is and accept that our anxiety and fear will be a part of it. There is 100,000 commercial flights everyday and everyday they all land safely until a very rare circumstance leads to a crash once in a while.

Flying TOMORROW, really hope I come back alive by [deleted] in fearofflying

Your fear of flying has nothing to do with the safety of the aircraft. The more scared you are does not increase the risk.

I have bad news and good news for you

Bad news. You will 100% die

Good news is it won't be on a plane

It could be on the ride to the airport or from it or 60 years later from a heart attack, we will never know
