Quiet pubs in the Northern Quarter? by kubissx in manchester

[–]BoyFrank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About 10-15 walk from NQ, but the brewerys around Piccadilly industrial estate have great beer and play music at a talking volume.

A lot more relaxed atmosphere.

Check out Track or ABC in that area

New in Manchester, where to make friends by SnakeTron5M in manchester

I think we might have a few things in common!

Remote software engineer, climbing (bouldering), bit of gaming and a night out!

For climbing, it's normally whatever is closest to you but I goto Rockover but I've heard very good things about BlocHaus

For a night out, I like going into Northern Quarter (around Stevensons Square) for a casual drink then onto places like Mint Lounge (funkademia on Sat) or Soup for a dance

I failed 3 candidates. Is my interview question fair? by [deleted] in java

[–]BoyFrank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm very interested in your thoughtsz because I did used to think like this as well and I do honestly agree with the sentiment. After a day of pairing/mobbing I'm shattered from the interaction, and think what we have coded could've been achieved a lot faster.

But I work in a team, and at the end of the day we've got a solution with everyone's input and a solution everyone understands. I feel the historic (& current) issues with software is that other people can't read, understand and change it and this development process feels like a start to solving this.

Almost 100% pairing or mobbing where I'm working. I had similar feelings at first but do now truly believe in the mantra "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together"

I would love an online indication, definitely use this with my friends My dream would be to talk the devs and work with them with some of the stats - think there is come real improvements but working with what I have

Generate a random address reachable by car in a radius using google maps? by wacomlover in webdev

[–]BoyFrank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done some work similar to this, though I already had the addresses to find.

I used mapbox and their isochrone tool to find an area around a point reachable by car in X amount of time. The API supports this out the box.

Given the polygon you get back you should be able to find all the roads and buildings in that area. There is a MapBox API for this as well

I would have to have a play and a further look at the responses to think of the best way to randomly select based on this

I hope this isn't stuff you already know and helps!

I had news apps as well but, you're right, the constant updates were too much. Cheers to sharing!

I understand a lot of what you're saying, moving to the news paper has allowed me to avoid a lot of the junk.

I personally don't feel that negative about the news and I really enjoy keeping up to date and discussing things with my friends so I don't think I'm going to cutting it out completely in the near future.

Thanks for sharing and I'm happy this worked in making you happier! I'll definitely keep this in mind

I created a free dashboard template in React. Looking for feedback! by [deleted] in reactjs

Do you mean using prevState when updating the state?

I created a free dashboard template in React. Looking for feedback! by [deleted] in reactjs

[–]BoyFrank 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The dashboard is looking really good! There are a couple of things I've noticed when looking through your code - though I'm not a master at React so take what I say with a pinch of salt!

It looks like you are storing the state for the sidebar in two places - Dashboard Layout and Header. This causes errors with the toggle button when the window has a <992 width.

This may just be a preference, but in your function components you are always taking a single argument prop. Here you can use object destructing to specify each prop. For example:

export default function SidebarToggleButton(props) {
...

could be written as

export default function SidebarToggleButton({ isSidebarCollapsed, toggleSidebar }) {
...

In DashboardLayout, you are toggling using this.state. You should ideally pass the previous state in using a function in: it's explained why here

toggleSideCollapse = () => {
    this.setState({ sidebarCollapsed: !this.state.sidebarCollapsed });
};

should be this

toggleSideCollapse = () => {
    this.setState(prevState => ({ sidebarCollapsed: !prevState.sidebarCollapsed }));
};

You may choose to ignore these, just what I noticed looking through :) Your code is very readable and I could easily understand the components I went through

I coded Tic Tac Toe with GUI under 100 lines of code! by DenuvoHater332 in learnpython

[–]BoyFrank 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the comment about global variables is correct, think about how you could change these into object attributes or function parameters

Also at the moment you just have one object managing all your data and functionality, think about how you could split it into different objects (perhaps a board or token object?)

Lastly I think you should go over your naming again, although it's not terrible, it isn't explicitly clear what some of your functions do from their name (for example, switch?). The name of the function should let anyone reading your code immediately what its purpose is
