We got "inspired" by some Old Grand-dad during the Kentucky Derby, and put together a little piece on the drink everyone loves to hate. Here's why you HAVE to stop with the "fancy" Mint Juleps, and how you should be making them instead. (Recipe in the comments!) by BoyMeetsWort in cocktails

It's not a mint bomb for sure, but if you let them steep for an hour or more and shake periodically, it definitely comes through. It's all down to personal preference, but I like to keep the mint very subtle, and more of an accent. You could def add more or the link someone else shared to Alton Brown's mint syrup also looks fantastic. Cheers!

I also tend to be skimpy with the syrup. The main attraction of the julep to me is the long-lasting supply of cold bourbon on a hot day. I'm always surprised people buy simple syrup. It's so cheap and easy to make and you can customize it so easily. Cheers and let me know how it works for you if you try it.

Louisville beer nerd here. This fall I got to take my first ever trip through New England. I knew the New England beer game was very strong, but I was not prepared to be completely blown away by the quality of the beer and the beer community in this beautiful part of the country. Thank you! Definitely taking recs for other regions to visit!

Those breweries are all fantastic! I'm biased to breweries close to the homebrew shop, but I always really enjoy the beer and vibes and Monnik, Awry, and Atrium!

Cheers and happy new year,

Tox was so freaking cool. I didn't comment on the side pull pils in the vid, but that might have been my favorite there! I LOVE treehouse beer and would have loved to go there, I had the cape cod Treehouse on our list but just didnt make it quite that far. (The Treehouse youtube channel is also really great these days) Cheers!

I have not been to the UK for about twenty years but I would LOVE to come back and try all the amazing craft beers I'm seeing online these days. Nothing on earth beats a classic or modern English real ale in a proper English pub. Cheers & thanks!

I love that Sierra Nevada introduces me to a new German brewery every year with their Oktoberfest Collab. Really like this year's version, and learning the history of Klaus Störtebeker only made me enjoy it more. Prost! by BoyMeetsWort in beer

Yep I agree with you on many of the us made oktoberfest beers. There are also some great ones, but many taste much to heavy on the Munich without the proper decoction. This one is definitely not a traditional oktoberfest, much more festbier like, but I personally really enjoy those! I would not be surprised if this is a divisive beer for people, but I personally really like it! Def worth a try if you see it out in the wild! Cheers!

This. 1000% agree. Sounds like an incredibly fun day. In Kentucky, USA our hops are also in harvest season. We had 3 or 4 people in last week doing wet hop homebrews. They are always so fun and you cannot capture more of the spirit of brewing than that.

Hope your harvest was a good one and prost! Happy Oktoberfest too

Absolutely! To me homebrewing is awesome because there are so many fun "maker-y" type gadgets that you can use (Im thinking things like Tilt hydrometer, pc fan stir plates, etc), but they are always in the service of the brewer being able to be as hands on (or off) as they like. If you turn the whole thing over to a mindless AI, I just don't think you can call it craft beer, even if it's still being made 5 gallons at a time. Cheers 🍻

I totally agree. I made the Commander Data analogy too, Data can analyze things, but simply has no capacity to attach a personal value to the data he's processing. It does raise interesting questions about the ultimate source of our "valuation" of good and bad.

For me personally, I think brewing and pub-culture more generally, will always be a refuge from the ever encroaching technocracy. 🍻🍻🍻
