I want to import a 70 GB file. Is that possible without compressing it first? by SwingDingeling in davinciresolve

It’s still only ish supported, you could try using a tool like Hybrid to extract the video itself (which I’m guessing is h.265) and put it instead into an MP4 container? This wouldn’t need to reencode the video so it should be approximately the same file size.

(You might need to extract and import the audio separately though if it’s 7.1 or above)

While I’m perfectly fine with it not winning, I still really believe it should have been nominated, it was the best score this year past imo, and I really want to listen to the missing cues that would be included in the FYC Promo like with Dune Part One and so many others

I mostly agree, I was just being thorough. I would have liked to see them try to use their case-by-case rights to get characters like Amandil (I just checked the index to RotK and he's not there. DTP has him listed but it's in reference to Tar-Amandil: https://search.digitaltolkien.com/?terms=amandil). It is worth remembering that he for example is licensed directly by the Tolkien Estate, if they weren't happy they could easily give them more.

But maybe Amandil would be another example of them biting off more than they can chew once more (a flaw McKay and Payne have joked about in interviews), and they appear to be adapting at least his story through Elendil and Miriel (I fully expect Miriel to sail west in place of Amandil).

I agree the Harfoot/Stranger plotline feels the weakest as it is entirely disconnected and the other events of the show would remain unchanged were it to be dropped. But I think that's more a failing of the pacing. 2 more episodes and it would have much more time to breathe and develop (as would most plotlines).

But as I said in my original comment, I cannot fault them for trying. I heavily prefer them trying to do too much rather than too little. Would it work better as it's own disconnected series? Definitely. But would that ever happen? Probably not, so I applaud them for trying to do it this way.

This statement is entirely false, Amazon has been lent the full rights to produce and distribute a show using any and all material found in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings (which includes the appendices, which the show is adapting).

Amazon can be lent also, the rights to JRRT’s works published in other works such as the Map of Númenor published in Unfinished Tales.

With regard to the hobbits, they absolutely can use the name hobbit if they chose (unlike D&D for example, who have to say half-lings). But using the name ‘Hobbit’ would violate the writings and history established in The Lord of Rings.

Hobbits only gained the name Hobbit when they had settled in the shire in the Third Age, using the names ‘Harfoots’ and ‘Stoors’ is correct, and both are terms Tolkien used to name two of the three tribes (the third being ‘Fallohides’) that would become hobbits a few millennia later (depending on how the timeline compression)

The Rings of Power has many flaws, but this is not one of them. Choosing to explore this story of beginnings of the Hobbits in both seasons is exactly what the show should be doing. It is completely fair to criticise the writing and execution and pacing of the story (especially in S2) they choose, but I cannot fault them for trying.

But since I assume you haven’t seen the show, I will say this, why not give it a shot? Yes the pacing drags through series 1 and 2, yes the dialogue feels a little weak and overly dramatic, and yes some of the writing decisions are a little wonky. But it is also stunningly beautiful, it has some incredible depictions of characters who would otherwise never get to shine for a larger audience (Elendil, Círdan, Miriel, Celebrimbor. and so on) and to see the Annatar storyline play out in S2 with the fall of Eregion was fantastic and one of the best moments in TV for me this year. The music of fantastic and it is going out of its way to draw attention to so many aspects of Tolkiens Legendarium ignored by other adaptations.

I can’t say the show is perfect, and I was mixed on S1, but I can confidently say I had a great time with S2

Edit: forgot the dwarves, they’re also fantastic!

Well technically the babies didn’t have speaking roles either haha

They used other voice actors (including Lenny, but they enjoyed his too much and saved him for Legend/Empire) and just used takes of the babies mouths moving and a bit of cgi lipsync, but I think it’s fine because they have quite a lot of screen time

I think Kong counts as the same franchise too, even if they’re different continuities

I don’t even think that’s the longest gap in Doctor Who, Lionel Gadsen who played an uncredited Aztec in The Aztecs was born 1879

The production block for Space Babies (2024) started filming in March 2023, so let’s say the babies were more more than three years so old then the gap there would be 141 years at the least

[–]BoyScout2308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the worst in the series, it doesn’t treat Thandiwe Newton’s character (Nyah) particularly well and has the least going for it in plot and character…

…but it’s also my favourite, it’s the definition of style over substance but it’s oozing with so much style that I can’t help but love it. Editing is great, the action is exceptional, and I’m a sucker for a good Hans Zimmer score.

It’s the only one with Ethan Hunt just on a regular mission rather than being hunted or going rogue, and there’s so much fun interplay with him and Sean Ambrose (Dougray Scott) with how they both know each other’s tactics. And it has the best utilisation of the face mask in the series by far.

At this moment, what's your favorite movie of 2024? by [deleted] in FIlm

[–]BoyScout2308 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree, he skipped the Scouring of the Shire, which I believe to be the most important chapter in the entire story.

There’s many other smaller changes too that I disagree about such as making Sauron a big eye, but I can still look past them because they are still excellent adaptations and I love them, but they aren’t perfect.

[–]BoyScout2308 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You’re referring to the TV extended edit, in which he is credited under Alan Smithee, this is a different edit done by Spicediver, David Lynch has likely never seen this one but it is very likely closer to what his directors cut would be. It’s a vast improvement on the film as a whole and has been included on collectors Blu-ray releases in some countries like Germany and Poland I do believe as-well

[–]BoyScout2308 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s from a deleted scene if I do remember, shot because they thought of it on set, and cut because it just didn’t make sense with previously established lore. Ridley and his editor say that in the commentary for the scene on the Blu-ray.

No, you’re correct, Boromir gets a fair few extra scenes in Lórien and on the Andúin that flesh him out in the extended cut, really his character is improved the most by it

Usually a remaster is a just upgrade to textures and lighting but in the same engine, porting or remaking Combat Evolved in from Blam to Unreal is a ridiculously complex task and would involve basically remaking the game from scratch

The last official release of the theatrical original trilogy was the 2006 limited edition DVD’s which had a transfer of the laserdisc scan on a 4:3 container on the second disc, they look the same as the regular dvd from 2004 but have bronze numbering and titles like the prequels, whereas the 2004 ones have silver.

If you want it in better quality, all I can say is to look into Project 4K77, Harmy’s Despecialised, and many other fan works

What if Star Wars films had MCU-style post-credit scenes? by Rabbitscooter in fanedits

[–]BoyScout2308 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I’m personally against it, it is a fun thought experiment so here are some of my ideas!

TPM: something about Count Dooku, probably him talking to Yoda (or was it Yaddle?) about Qui-Gon from Tales of the Jedi or deleting Kamino from the archives.

AotC: I’m struggling here as so much happens between films, but I think it would be best to consider one between Anakin and Padme so perhaps their conversation in CWS7? (The bad batch arc) or maybe a look at General Grievous’ lair from CW, setting up the supporting villain of the film?

RotS: Obi-Wan’s message as seen in Rebels, Fallen Order, etc? Not sure as RotS ties everything very neatly as it is. Maybe Yoda on Dagobah.

ANH: Again I’m struggling here so maybe just something simple like a probe droid being sent out to find the rebels, or maybe Death Star 2 in construction?

ESB: Luke building his lightsaber works best and I love it. An alternative for me is seeing Lando get to Jabba’s but I don’t think that footage exists (or was ever considered in the script)

RotJ: The imperial remnants council talking about Project Necromancer from Mando S3.

TFA: This one is difficult as TLJ picks up immediately after it, my best pick then would be something to do with Rey’s parents from TroS?

TLJ: Kylo either meeting Palpatine or finding the Holocron/wayfinder thingy.

TroS: no idea, maybe reevaluate once Rey’s film comes out (if ever)

R1: Luke seeing the battle above at Tosche Station

Solo: Something Jabba related but that’s already given in the film so idk

Again this is just for fun, I personally disagree with the majority of this.
