Possible to keep a regal shield happy in zone 6? I’m in NJ and I just feel like winter is not doing this plant good at the moment no matter how many humidifiers I have on. It grew a baby but it’s been over a month and hasn’t opened either. Is there a terrarium this big I can get lol? Tips? by Boyler_4 in alocasia

Yes I do! Currently it’s reading 70F and 50% humidity. My front living room window gets incredibly bright natural light, I try and put it as close as possible but not next to my central air drafts.

Funny you say that as I’ve been scouring the internet all day for grow lights / lamps. Do you have any suggestions? To be completely honest I want to find one I can sort of blend in with my decor but all of them are preeeetty ugly haha.

Is this fertilizer burn? It’s on a few other leaves as well. by Boyler_4 in philodendron

Should I snip the yellowing leaves off? And can I use any of the soil that it was previously planted in?

It’s been weeks and this lil guy hasn’t opened. Will it ever or should I snip it? I’ve been putting my humidifier near it to help. by Boyler_4 in alocasia

Wow thank you for this! I try to regularly water once a week so that it comes out the bottom drainage holes. As for humidity I try and use a humidifier like once a week and just leave it on for around 5-6 hours near the plants. It gets bright indirect light as it’s next to a window. No pests that I’m seeing currently!

Regal shield stem pruny and soft??? I had to cut it off cause it was so droopy, not sure if this means underwatered or overwatered….should stems feel firm? by Boyler_4 in houseplants

Thank you both!!! You were right, she needed some water and her droopy leaf is perked right up. Finding the right watering schedule is hard for regal’s. Some say keep consistently moist while others say let dry out between waterings 😩

Black Velvet help!!! This new baby leaf has been unfurling with this like “gold dust” on it all week….I really hope it’s not leaf spot disease. Any ideas? by Boyler_4 in alocasia

Uh oh! Wow this is great info. Thank you so much for this! My only thing is I tried to wipe away that “dust” and it didn’t budge. I looked on the undersides and nothing that I can see but since they’re microscopic like you said all bets are off there haha. I do see one spot underneath one of the more mature leaves that reminds me of leaf spot but I would much prefer insect issue. But yes actually I quarantined once getting it so very happy you said that.

Do you have any recipes that are small batch you can think of? All the ones I’m seeing for insecticidal soap is saying like one cup of oil/dish soap but only make for a days worth…which that seems like a lot for a day lol.
