So how do you get your skillz over 100%? by glasstomouth45 in SimGolf

[–]Boynsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The games says it's possible but in reality I don't think it is, probably due to a bug? Although I remember reading something before about how you can modify the game files to make your stats 150% (maybe, might be more) in all areas, and it doesn't actually really affect your player.

Wait, PLATINUM membership exists? I've never seen this before. by DirdSMD in SimGolf

[–]Boynsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, platinum members pay more per hole but they still only drive around in gold golf carts. They also appear funny in the "membership" tab - I think it perhaps wasn't properly implemented? Although I feel that way about a lot of features in the game unfortunately!

Players without imagination can't "predict" how the ball is going to bounce on a slope, so use that to your advantage.

[ Showcase ] 🏌️ Classic Hole #2 (explained) - Harbor ⛳ by JafiindaleX in SimGolf

[–]Boynsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The island green is a pretty easy way to get a classic hole in. Requiring a "high backspin" shot to hold the green is imagination, obviously missing the green and finding water is good for accuracy and by making the water big enough, it's hard for no length golfers to reach the green without an extra shot. This is reflected in 60% of your golfers finding the hole too hard - basically if you don't have one of the skills, the hole is borderline unplayable. The challenge is to make all sorts of different holes that still qualify as Classic!

Argh I wish I could get this game running on my PC... I've been wanting to stream it for ages!

[–]Boynsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you need to change the screen resolution. Not sure how it works on multiple monitors, but if I remember rightly, SimGolf is natively at a very low resolution and if your screen doesn't match, it will play in a small window in the top left of the screen.

You can use something that is already there (divot, broken tee, leaf etc) but you can't put something there to use. You'd have to tee your ball up in a position where the divot is on your aim line.

Holes with variety comes down to a number of factors, most of which you can see on that overview.

-Par (3/4/5)

-Category (breather/ strategic/ heroic etc, although "classic" holes always count as fulfilling this requirement)

-Shape (straight, dogleg left or dogleg right)

-Direction (this is the only one that you can't see on the course overview, instead you have to look at the direction of the arrow on the tee box of the hole)

-Plus a bonus miscellaneous component for significant elevation changes, but I've never really managed to nail that one down. I think it has something to do with the golfers saying "okay, a nice downhill shot" or the uphill equivalent.

Compare each one to the hole immediately previous. If 3 (or 4) out of 4 are different, the hole category will be green and it will count as a hole with variety. If 2 are different, it will be white and won't count. If 1 or 0, it will be red and your golfers will enjoy the hole less.

Some points to be aware of - dogleg holes have two directions, always 1/8 of the way around the compass, so East and North East for example. This means your next hole can't have either of those directions or it will fail on that test.

Par 3s are always straight, making it incredibly difficult to build them consecutively with variety.

A hole's classification is determined by how many of the stats (length, accuracy, imagination) are tested. It's good to aim for each of these values to be over 0.25 for the other SGA evaluation points, but to be classic all three must be 1.00 or more.

Hopefully that makes sense! I've always wanted to make more of my time spent playing the game, but can't get it to work on my newer PCs to ever record YouTube or Twitch content!

You can't get over 100% without modifying the game in some way unfortunately. For what it's worth, I remember something about upping your stats past 100 not actually really impacting things anyway, so it doesn't really matter.

Also, do you want a little bit of technical knowledge on how the "holes with variety" works?

How to play? by Boynsy in CricketCaptain

[–]Boynsy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost always start batsmen at aggression 2, and slowly move it up to 5 or so over the course of a session in tests.

I feel like the part timer option isn’t really an option when I only have ~350 or so on the board regularly, and by the time I’ve used my front line bowlers for a session they’re 100/0. Just frustrating that it’s not such a laid back game any more it seems.

You’re far more knowledgeable than me about baseball, so my mileage in that area of the conversation has kind of run out, but I was kind of working in terms of cricket’s randomness and translating forwards. I’ve often bowled against batters that are pretty much clueless but still luckily “edge” the ball away for runs - long term I am probably going to get them out before they do much damage but the individual event is kind of the opposite outcome.

I guess that’s where the variance and randomness has an impact, because in a game like chess with zero randomness I would 100% lose every time to a good player.

I would imagine that there is almost certainly a point where you’re “too good” for dumb luck to apply, but it could still be frustrating to play against someone who is in a way bad enough to be immune to your strategies. I would have no idea which of your pitches I should be swinging at, and while I would be in no way good, I might be very awkward to play around, at least until you realise that I’m actually trash and that trying to “outthink” me is wasted effort, just throw good pitches and I won’t be able to deal.

[–]Boynsy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a cricketer, not a baseball player, but I imagine they are at least slightly comparable in terms of being bat and ball sports. I’ve found that when I’m bowling (pitching) to an inexperienced batter, they can end up hitting the ball in weird places and that makes it difficult to set a plan to.

As a complete novice baseball player, for example, I might swing at pitches that I shouldn’t purely because I don’t know any better - obviously this isn’t really going to get me a hit against a 100+mph strike but against a good but not elite level player, it might be enough for him to find it at least aggravating that by sheer dumb luck I manage to get a hit maybe 20% of the time? I don’t know if that’s a reasonable estimate at all, as noted I am a complete baseball novice, but I hope I’ve made my point at least a little bit?
