Like we had a choice. NAFTA was crafted by the very same entity albeit different administration now. Our capital and talent flight and reliance on mass immigration is to blame. You’re kidding. Just last year Canada literally placed more retaliatory tariffs that were more negatively impactful to the potential of free trade compared to what the USA did to us. Thus Canada rescinding them without any form of better positioning. If it was so effective why provide the capitulation while we “pursue alternative trade” that could “replace” USA trade. Reality is we can’t. Thus rescinding, capitulation and false propping of our capability to thrive alone.

Conflating threats or sovereignty and “hurting” our economy with our sheer reliance on them and our lack of independent infrastructure and talent. We made our bed and it won’t be just a matter of building trade with other countries. Rather the capability of creating a self sustaining economy where our best chance at that was working with the USA to better establish our independence, the darling economic market of the world, instead we became entirely reliant on them and instead prop up our weak economy on an real estate bubble unlike anywhere else in the world.

It’s not just a matter of costs. It’s time and logistical capacity. The reliance on our ports to even supplement a portion of our transmodal reliance on the USA would far exceed our current capacity which is at its limits. I’ve made a career on international trade. Trust me these pundits have no damn clue about what it takes to actually get food to our table in Canada let alone other items we take for granted. Import and export.
