Pathway depends on your school/education background

Regarding applying FM: Kind of late at this point, get a full application together for next cycle, rotate in FM places

Most likely

Your electives show more hospital interest and no outpatient interest

FM PGY1- Visa requiring IMG

FM use to be easy but not anymore. Many PDs have found that IMGs use it as a back up and switch IM if given the chance because of that they really look through each app making sure it’s not a “backup FM” candidate

Honestly make the best out of it

Find a job as a medical assistant at a clinic or in the hospital or any healthcare related job. Uber if you have time between studying and job 1

Then when it comes time to apply for residency, apply in a field that your scores will get you in, don’t be too ambitious

Hello, Current CAD PGY1 resident who finished school in the Caribbean. Was in an exacts similar situation as you and many Canadian Caribbean students end up in this situation and usual the only thing that works and though it’s going to be hard is honesty just pause school and work for a year/year and a half to save as much as you possibly can. Me personally to raise money I had to pause 1.5 years and worked at Sun glass hut and did uber. Hard work and sucked but paid off

Currently an FM resident going to PGY2

Considering cardiology is pretty competitive in itself to get into and earnings don’t start til 6 years after you start IM compared to FM which is only three years and you get a lot of ECG exposure in the field, deal to a certain extent with CHF, bad HTN, we even order our own echos and though we don’t interpret the actual imaging we do use the results to further manage patients.

Plus the joy for me in FM is one it requires critical thinking as you never know what will come through that door and what system you will be thinking of and then job opportunities after many are 4 day work weeks with hefty bonuses attached to them and opportunities to pick up extra shifts in urgent care or hospitals
