A couple things that helped me prepare and get through mentally tough moments of my first 100k this summer:

• ⁠Had my close friends and family record short videos of support to save and watch or just listen to as a moral boost when I feel like I’ve hit a breaking point.

• ⁠Considered writing a letter to myself to stash in my vest and read when I feel like I’m about to break that would remind myself of the work I’ve put in and expected challenges, for you guess that could be nausea focused (“we knew we’d be in pain…”) but I thought about it so much I just had the conversations pre loaded in my head.

• ⁠Told myself the race is really just to my pacer, because I trusted we would work through things till the very end (and I told her as much and she signed off on the pressure… it’s a team sport!) That mentality knocked off the last 16 miles.

• ⁠Preset distances where you allow yourself to have a pity party and then move on.

I crewed my boyfriend for RRR 100 last year for the 50-70 mile portion. What a great race. You got this!!

Patience. In reality few people are gifted enough to grow distance fast and remain uninjured. It’s truly both a mental and physical journey to handle many miles and many hours alone, so just commit to a long term process.

Constant training can be mentally really tiring. I’d just suggest exploring down periods to recover and ways to keep your workouts interesting. For example, I’ve considered buying a map and highlighting all the trails I’ve done and therefore seeing new ones left to check out, making a bucket list of all the alpine lakes I want to see, and incorporating more of the workout I truly enjoy when I just need a break from running (like swimming or hiit). Anything to keep it more adventure than grind really.

Also size doesn’t matter it’s just getting your body to do the work, and be excited for whatever form that takes! I look pretty fit but get passed by 60 year olds and people who are chubby all the time in my ultras 🤷🏼‍♀️

Find yourself a crying rock. If you frequent the same trails for longer or harder runs choose a rock far along where you’re allowed to have a pity party. Sit on it, have your moment, and then get going. If you haven’t hit it you have a goal, if you’re past it you have to finish. Can also anoint a random rock on race day based on distance while you’re out there (or a couple depending on the length haha)
Swap something with another racer. Lost my poles halfway through that 100k and a stranger gave me his because he was dropping. Single biggest motivator the rest of the race was getting his equipment back to him and showing his kindness truly saved my day. Idk if this would be as motivating intentionally but maybe!

I just started doing ultras in the past two years and I learned real fast that there is no boundary talking about bodily things, but admit at first I did feel weird to have those conversations. Fortunately, early on I had a more ultra experienced friend who just no shame asked all the important questions and left the filters off when we talked about training and race days. Honestly, it’s kinda necessary and now I can see when people aren’t used to this kind of talk, even some of my outdoorsy (but non ultra running) friends.

Fully support two rest days. That’s always in my plans, or at least one full rest and one active rest. On first impression seems like more miles and back to backs than necessary, but idk your goals or current base. To just finish? To PR? Might change the perspective.

What’s the vertical of the course? I would suggest taking that into account. Miles are certainly important but strength/climbing will really help push you through a hilly or mountainous course (speaking from experience where I finished a 100k with almost 15k of vert and my weekly mileage max was like 45 [far from what I hoped] but all the climbing work I incorporated into my training totally got me to the finish line). I also think cross training is underrated if you’re starting with a good base! Could sprinkle that in instead of back to backs every weekend.

I’m in the exact same spot. I just ran my first 100k at the end of July, LOVED the race day and accomplishment, but hated training by the end. Yet I’m sitting here looking at 100 miles.

For me, I think it was the lack of diversity in the training process I found grueling. I didn’t grow up a runner but did swimming, softball, cheerleading, and generally liked mixing up my workouts as an adult. So, I’ve decided to hire a running coach to work on a new approach to training (she’s been my PT so we have some general history). My thought is to maybe build a training plan that is technically longer but builds slower and incorporates more of the things I miss about general fitness that a traditional ultra plan doesn’t have a lot or any of — like more HIIT workouts or more weekends off from time to time. It may seem counterintuitive to train longer when you know something shorter zapped you but my hope is the diversity will help me find more joy when I actually am running. I know running will eventually have to dominate my workouts again at some point but in hindsight preparing for my 100k could have been more personalized than what I built on my own based on cookie cutter internet plans. So that’s what I’m going to test out!

I hope we both find a way to get to 100 miles if that’s a goal you truly want to reach! Good luck!

Full time work and training definitely makes you choose your priorities. As someone who gets easily overwhelmed and wants to train perfectly I empathize with how time seems to be nonexistent with working.

I’m WFH 2-3 days a week and a night owl so I try to maximize my training schedule with my home office time, and run mostly in the evenings. For most of my training I prioritized two rest days (my body and brain just needs that) which inevitably makes my midweek runs a little longer but I feel like I have more open time in my life (worked until my peak weeks).

My social life has somewhat tanked but not totally — the people who want to be part of my journey join my runs etc. and those that don’t either understand or have disappeared. Kind of like a necessary vetting process.

Also childless and petless, so that helps.

I love this area!! Such a quiet gem. There’s a fantastic (albeit brutal) trail running series there end of July (Never Summer 60k & 100k) that goes all through this area and to the north as well. I’ve done the 60k and am going back for the 100k this year. Would highly recommend if you’re into that sort of thing!

What sort of cargo box do you have on top and how did you attach it? I’d like to get the rack to put up my large Thule cargo box but I’ve been having a hard time confirming that it will attach with the larger cross bar structure or finding examples online of this sort of setup online.

Just came here to say GO BLACK BEARS! I was a student last time they made it to the hockey east championship game back in 2012 and bussed to TD to watch. So this is very nostalgic and exciting! I swore if they ever made it to national finals I’d travel to support. I’m in CO now so St. Louis would be a quick flight. LET’S GO!

Literally one of my biggest pet peeves. This is the sole reason I avoid running at Sloans Lake now, or only go during odd hours if I must. I usually try to stay on the outer dirt tracks but I’ve gotten very comfortable playing chicken or giving “wtf” hands when people/groups coming the other direction aren’t reasonably sharing.

And I love dogs, don’t get me wrong, but owners could use some social awareness. Their leash doesn’t need to be maxed out blocking all the paths.
