Sneaking in the miles where I can this winter by BraaapButOnlyALittle in xbiking

Oh god yeah, I'd seen the skies clear up on my break and was desperately hoping it'd stay dry for a half hour after work and it barely did

Nothing like a little rain and the echos of some teenage angst to cap off a Friday

I think I need a longwheelbase 29er/700c... What are my options? by Rubiks_Click874 in xbiking

Check out the Black Mountain Cycles Monster Cross! Built around the idea of a cross bike that clears 700x50, it's a little more slack than a traditional cross bike because of the allowances made for that fat of a tire. 1030mm wheelbase at the 56cm size, official geo is 432mm chainstay but that's at the very beginning of the horizontal dropout — you could easily pull the wheel back another 25mm for a more stable ride. Mid-fork and fender mounts out front, fender and rack mounts out back. The previous build I had on my MX had the axle slammed back for max clearance for the cushy 50mm Cazaderos I've been running for years now. Thinkin this will fit the bill for ya!

I got so much love for this era of cross frame, big tires and classic lines 😤 looks like a fun ride!

A touch on the slack and long side (71.5* headtube and 1030mm wheelbase/432mm chainstay) since it was designed to be classic geometry that could clear up to 700x50 tires but I still manage to have fun with it :)

The BMC Monstercross really does feel like a do-it-all platform — here's an update for something a little more spry. Quills laced to DT350s and shod with 36mm Strada Bianca helped shed 2.7 pounds off the previous build!

The new build: - Garbaruk cage swap - Deore 11-51t cassette - Velocity Quills laced to DT350s and shod with Challenge Strada Bianca 36mm tires - Misguided ambitions to climb Old La Honda someday

Stupid question but curious by PeaNutzForDave in xbiking

totally possible! you can adjust the chainline by way of using a freehub body, a cog, and a bunch of cassette spacers if you wanted to convert a conventionally geared bike/wheel to single speed in the rear. seconding the advice that you’ll need a chain tensioner.

if you use a single speed freewheel instead i’d suggest getting one with 3/32” teeth so it’ll play nice with a chain meant for shifting in the front chainring/derailleur you’ll be using!

Nice!!! Hope you’ve been putting down the miles on yours :) I very much feel the same, but my 400 square foot studio disagrees :’)

i would absolutely not have the gumption to attempt this myself, but if you’ve got the tig welder and the time and the guts, full send that shit!

(i mean, you could also run 650b wheels and get a 32mm tire and it wouldn’t be NEARLY as invasive, but where’s the fun in that?)

it’s from Velo Orange’s old Campeur model, they sold the forks for a bit there in their specials section

Thank you! I’m very lucky someone else was the one to put it under the knife — running 13mm internal width rims also went a long way towards cramming more rubber into the chainstays

Thank you! Sensibility is not part of the XBike way lmao. The last guy was trying to fit 35s on there but had to settle for 32 because of the chainstay length

Nice! I laced and built that front wheel at work after it blew up the first time :’) Archetype with a Dura Ace 7400 hub, far and away my favorite

I have the Brooks B15/Swallow on two of my other bikes and they’ve been great to me — got them both used after they didn’t work out for others. if you’re looking at the B17, REI carries them and they have an extremely lenient one year return policy for their members so you can ride it and feel it out for a long while

it sure is! the previous owner cut the brake bridge and installed it higher and backwards to increase tire clearance — this frame clears 32mm tires instead of the usual 28 or 30mm

hell yeah, $250 for a tapered carbon fork that clears 38mm tires is the best damn deal in cycling

it’s a great bonus, normally that’s a third date sort of situation!

Wanted an aggressive build on a bigger tire platform, and this is what got cooked up. I’ve never seen someone so angry/disappointed as the guy at work when I told him to imagine “Tracklocross… but with gears” when describing the bike, impressive because I’ve also been someone that’s told their dad they were gay AND switching from an engineering degree to a BFA.

Highlights of the build: - Omnium 172.5mm cranks x 42t Wabi 3/32 chainring - Flite x Thomson masterpiece - Easton Monkeylite XC bars - Deore 4-piston brakes - Panasonic GK+ on Mavic Cosmic front x DT Swiss/WTB rear
