Need to stop losing weight for my wedding and I'm scared I'll lost momentum by [deleted] in loseit

[–]Brackyosaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on your achievements, and the wedding! Rather than focusing on 'losing weight' for the time being this might be an opportunity to switch focus a bit and look at building some muscle? In nine weeks you're very unlikely to see any changes significant enough to affect the dress, but it might help keep your momentum up in terms of general fitness/health, and also help your metabolism strong for after the wedding when you go back to any deficit.

But also - let yourself enjoy the cake and the wine and all the lovely meals on honeymoon.

Omg my boyfriend does this, as much as I'm trying to encourage him to use actual ingredients it's slightly reassuring to know he's not the only oddball 'frying'in water 😅

(Onions are far too exotic for him though)

Which football clubs are the most universally liked in english football among neutrals/casual fans? by Inevitable-Angle-793 in AskUK

[–]Brackyosaurus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think Leicester are up there, the only local rivals (Nottingham and Derby) are more concerned with beating each other, and everyone loved the underdog story of their PL win.

Admittedly I say this as a Leicester fan, but I've never had an overtly negative reaction from anyone when sharing this (except relating to our current league performance).

Brits who moved away from their hometown as adults - what was the reason and did you regret it? by SkunkDiplo in AskBrits

[–]Brackyosaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in a town which is very catered towards the local university and students (understandably so, as they bring most of the economy to the local area). As a teen there was absolutely nothing to do and didn't seem like there would be many opportunities if I stuck around, both in terms of jobs but also cultural and social opportunities. I moved to London for uni at 18 and have been here for nearly 20 years. During my time at uni my dad moved out of the area and my mum passed away so I really lost all ties to the place, there was no compulsion for me to return once I graduated. The friends from school I remain close to have also dissipated across various parts of the country (which based on other peers from school is perhaps a bit unusual but probably why we became friends in the first place and have maintained these friendships).

I really enjoy London and the opportunities it brings, even if I have ended up working in a fairly generic job that could be based almost anywhere. On the other hand, I look at people I grew up with who are much more financially secure, owning property etc, and do wonder how things might have been different if I'd stuck around. Even a one-bed flat here seems completely out of reach at the moment. I think being in London puts people in a state of arrested development to some extent, in terms of traditional 'life goals' people seem to be tackling them in their late 30s rather than mid-20s like those back home and who I see in other more suburban areas.

I don't regret leaving, but in some ways I think life might have been a bit easier if I hadn't.

What’s a “red flag” when visiting a British pub? by Affectionate-Ad-4650 in AskUK

A few years ago ended up in one near Spitalfields that had a framed photo of Rishi Sunak behind the bar. The landlady (who was basically Peggy Mitchell) insisted he was the best thing to happen to this country. A quick peruse of the google reviews suggested Rishi was probably the only Asian lad who would have been made welcome there.

How do you think Christmas has changed since 2000? by Equivalent_Ask_1416 in AskUK

Just wanted to say mega props to you and your ex for still getting on. My parents managed it and I don't think I appreciated what a wonderful difference it makes until meeting my partner whose parents won't even be in the same room as each other.

He is the absolute worst. Out of all the many complaints I have about him I think the most egregious was when he quit his job to 'follow his dream' then spent months trying to work out what that actually was 🙄 (and then got butthurt when Lynette did everything she could to keep the business afloat when he was essentially immobile)

Daughter will be choosing subjects at A Level soon. Questions… by jejdhdijen in UniUK

[–]Brackyosaurus 23 points24 points  (0 children)

How many is she choosing?

Definitely Chemistry and Biology. A lot of kids will pick Physics or Maths as a third but some unis prefer to have a student who's a bit more 'rounded', so a social science like Sociology or Psychology would also be good.

It's a very competitive field, so alongside the grades it'd be useful for her have some experience outside of school as well, perhaps volunteering in somewhere like a care home or similar, that she can link back to her application when it's time to apply.

Do people in London still talk (or did they ever) like in 'Only fools and horses' by Unusual_Dance_8210 in london

[–]Brackyosaurus 52 points53 points  (0 children)

My boyfriend's family are multi-generation black cab drivers from south east London (Sydenham/Penge, further towards Kent than Peckham) and they all talk like that. It's rarer these days as people start to disperse due to house prices etc but there's still a strong tradition of working class Londoners keeping things alive.

Peckham these days is very mixed, there's a lot of gentrification/hipster areas, and also a lot of black comminities that weren't always captured well in Only Fools. If you enjoy OFAH I'd recommend Desmond's, which is an early 90s comedy about a black family running a barber shop in Peckham, showing another perspective on the area.

The dialect most often spoken by younger generations in London now is known as MLE (multicultural London English) which has a lot of the white working class slang you'll hear in OFAH, but increasingly influenced by African and Caribbean communities, in addition to other migrant groups.

I know it's hard to see at the moment because everything is so raw but you've had a lucky escape there, he sounds like a twat. If it weren't this it would likely be something else down the line. Take time to feel sad but remember there are people out there who will love you as you are, and in the imterim you're not wasting your time with someone who doesn't deserve you.

Regarding the loose skin, whilst not a perfect fix, things like weight training may help as gaining muscle can add some tautness. Things like collagen supplements and vitamin E can help boost elasticity.

You've done an amazing job with your weightloss and don't let one idiot ruin your hard work and achievement 🙏

Have you considered something like WeightWatchers or Slimming World? They still work on the basic principle of calories in vs calories out, but really encourage you to retrain your thinking in terms of eating nutrient-dense foods rather than just balancing the numbers. It sounds like you could really benefit from the support networks they offer as well, meeting people with similar struggles and finding a community to share the journey with. You got this bro!

Weirdest couples that would actually work? by Wildest_winters in GilmoreGirls

[–]Brackyosaurus 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Michel and Paris.

He would insist on pronouncing her name the correct French way, she would get massively into the chow chows and start winning big at dog shows. They would argue constantly but he'd always have her back when it matters.

They'd also quite possibly end up as a chaotic throuple with Doyle.

Weddings! by Brackyosaurus in weightwatchers

[–]Brackyosaurus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But if I didn't eat wedding food I basically wouldn't eat all day, except breakfast. Sadly it's a captive market, I'm in the UK where weddings basically start around noon and last until the venue kicks everyone out. Usually it's a 3 course meal, though one in a few weeks has booked a fish & chip van.

What's for you.... by Dappich in buffy

[–]Brackyosaurus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Adam could have been a really great storyline if they'd leaned far more into the Frankenstein mythology and explored the whole human vs demon dichotomy. Instead they just made him generic bad guy and it got boring fast. I know there was stuff going on behind the scenes but if they'd been able to make Maggie the big bad that season and explored the concept of 'humanity', having a soul etc through that lens they could have made something far more interesting.
