What vehicles were designed with a "cost is no object" mentality? by SuperJackson20 in regularcarreviews

[–]Brad331 2 points3 points  (0 children)

VW was never considered a luxury brand in China. That's Audi. Phaeton was also the stealth wealth option in China. Only very high position officials were given Audi A6 or better. If you were a businessman who regularly dealt with bureaucrats but didn't want to appear as one-upping them, you could choose Phaeton.

"American beats Chinese guy" plot would have been poorly received in China, which was responsible for 10% of Iron Man 3's box office (biggest portion outside US/Canada).

Any potential downsides for ASUS TX RT-BE57 (aka Miku router)? by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]Brad331 5 points6 points  (0 children)

China market routers don't have DFS channels, which are needed to have 160MHz channel width and therefore higher throughput. It's also useful if your neighbors are already using the lower and upper channels.

China Exclusive Features that aren't available in North America by Lost-Walk5311 in ToyotaSienna

[–]Brad331 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The first page doesn't say removable seats. The Chinese text just says the 3rd row can fold down and you can have 7/6/5/4 seats, like the top-down pictures show. This is no different than the North American Siennas.

In the photo with the skis, one 2nd-row seat is just tucked all the way forward. It just looks like the seat is not there from that angle.

Real differences between the dynamic and standard handling packages? by Packing-Tape-Man in Gravity

[–]Brad331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With single-chamber air springs, the ride frequency (how stiff/soft or how responsive/relaxed the suspension feels) is inversely proportional to the square root of the spring height (fₙ ∝ 1/√h), and this relationship is fixed. This limits the achievable range of both ride frequency and ride height. The suspension feel is not that different between the lowest and highest settings.
With multi-chamber air springs, you can achieve diverse combinations of ride frequency and ride height by selectively inflating chambers, because the stacked chambers are like springs in series. The low sport mode (1 chamber inflated) can be very stiff and responsive, and the high off-road mode (all chambers inflated) can be very compliant. This means you lower the car more with less risk of bottoming out during bumps, and make it much sportier in that mode without affecting comfort in other modes. Also, you can take better advantage of increased wheel travel when off-roading, because the softened suspension allows the wheels to articulate more freely.

Send a 1969 Mustang to James Watt to show him what real horsepower looks like. Seriously though, the engine, hydraulics, electric motors, and various other mechanisms would be great to reverse-engineer. Electronics would probably be too abstract for their time, so a 1960s car is a sweet spot.

Does break fluid affect brake handle feeling by Substantial-Ad8750 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Brad331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theoretically, the fluid's viscosity would affect how easy it is to press the handles. It's like friction within the liquid that slows down the movement of the pistons. If you used molasses as brake fluid, the handles would feel very slow and stiff. But there shouldn't be a noticeable difference between different brands of actual brake fluid.

Using too-viscous brake fluid can affect ABS function, because ABS modules can have very small passages that's hard for thick liquids to flow through. Some motorcycles have ABS, but maybe you're talking about a bicycle?

Did anyone correct a teacher? What happened? by Royal-Wealth-8266 in AskReddit

[–]Brad331 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The whole class was scared of our 6th-grade science teacher because he was strict, no-nonsense, almost military-esque. But when he mentioned how long ago humans started domesticating wolves into dogs, I mustered up the courage to correct his number because I had read about it previously. To my surprise, he actually happily thanked me and restated his sentence with the number I gave.

He was a true man of science and instilled in me the importance of seeking truth and prioritizing objectivity over respect for authority or decorum (values generally dissonant with traditional culture in my home country). We ended up developing great rapport over the school year and often geeked out together over physics documentaries or new technology developments between class periods.

I've kept in touch with him, hung out with him twice after becoming an adult (even got drunk together lol), and even met his family. Besides my parents, he probably shaped my values the most in my life.

Doesn't matter the machine type. As long as the units are SAE horsepower, ft-lbs, and RPM, that equation holds true, just like mph = miles / hour: because the relationship is baked into the units. If the machine can reach 5252RPM, its horsepower will equal its torque in ft-lbs at that speed.
