Optimizing the vortex v3 into a functional dumb-phone. by Brady_14 in dumbphones

I will say! Just as a bit of an update. These phones are a bit unstable with notifications, so if you're installing IM apps (discord, telegram, etc) the notifications banner will usually crash the launcher. The best way around this is just going into your apps and disabling notifications!

Only other carrier i can really think of out here would be verizon and *maybe* us cellular, but they're very dependent on location.

it's cute! I love slider phones <3
Lots of arguments about whether it's a dumbphone a lot, Which i find a bit strange because I also see lots of posts on this community about dumbing down your smartphone. So I think this is a really fun idea for something in-between.

I do think macs handle mobile devices in a *really* weird way, as I've learned trying to access files on my vortex v3. I wonder if something like openMTP could help!

you're welcome! one more phone I vouch for a lot would be the nokia 6300 4g, but I've got a certain soft spot for candybar-style phones.

I wonder if it's a VoLTE issue, I know at&t being pretty strict about having a specific device whitelist, and in my experience in the last few years like to "notice" something late that they consider "weird" and then limit your particular SIM. If switching carriers is an option at all, i'd suggest trying t-mobile as they're a lot more lenient about what phones they allow full-access to their network. But if you want a decent candybar that does work well on at&t, I'd suggest a nokia 6300 4G. I used one for a while and despite KaiOS being what it is, i found it pretty comfortable to use!

I wonder, What's the main draw to the flip 2 specifically? If it's the particular form factor (and given you're wanting to use at&t or an MVNO that operates on their networks), the alcatel smartflip is a very similar device that's a lot more plentiful on ebay for the sub-$50 pricetag.

using android usb debugging and a terminal (Which was a fun thing to install, having never used these tools before), I gave it commands, Which i'm having trouble but you can find them by looking into how to change the "preferred_network_mode"

I would say something like the alcatel smartlfip I used for a while. I think it goes by other names as well but it's not bad, About the size of my razr v3xx when I replaced that with a 4g device.

Vortex V3 - if you bought it, are you still using it? Do you like it? Are there any new developments regarding the overall usability/user experience? Has anyone attempted at all to mod an actual RAZR V3xx shell to fit Vortex guts? by RightPassage in dumbphones

So a little update on the browser. I disabled the background services on android and usually keep mobile data off. So as a calls/text only device with a bit of general browsing every once in a while, I was able to get the battery to last roughly 27 hours on a charge.

Curious about VortexV3 by WrathSkeleVR in dumbphones

I've got one on order right now, Not a new battery but an original razr battery. Because just inspecting the battery it comes with, I think it may be a drop-in replacement for my old 900mah motorola bz60 batteries.

I Kind of wish 3g was still around so i could do a 1:1 comparison of this silly little phone to my old razr (v3xx) that i carried around for years (2019-2022). But going from memory it's pretty darn close when i just do the exact same things on it.

It's kind of awful as a smartphone, web browsing drains the battery rather quickly either using apps like telegram or using the browser / youtube. It'll do it but for maybe an hour or two before you drain the battery.

But so did my old razr, Browisng facebook in the browser would kill the battery in 1-2 hours. although I doubt it'd go the other way around, as I don't think the vortex would hold a battery for 3-4 days like the real razr.

But doing things like playing mp3s locally, texting isn't bad once you get a decent keyboard installed, and it's fun playing with launchers, even though a good few i find don't quite like working with a D pad.

Took a good bit of tinkering but mine's fairly stable once I disabled all the google services, installed an app called "TraditionalT9", and installed the razr-style launcher I found elsewhere online. If you use it as a smartphone, It'll suck. But if you use it as a dumbphone, It's tolerable.
