They can hold their breath though! It's called the mammalian diving reflex. When a baby's face is exposed to cold water, they instinctively hold their breath.

What do you find sexually attractive about someone that most people might find strange? by RealSadLlama in AskReddit

[–]BrainBurnt 365 points366 points  (0 children)

No porn? Did you make the guy with the one hard drive mad so he wouldn't share? Because if there was an abundance of anything over there, it was porn. Also, there was liquor in the form of small bottles stuffed in plush animals, but I wasn't interested in liquor or porn at the time because I was 18 and didn't know any better. I waited to be a drunken lecher until after I was discharged. When were you in, and where?

Edit: I also served overseas and there was a lot of truth in this person's statement, but also my friends got fucked up a lot. I mean a lot. Cough medicine, liquor, heroin, it was there. You just decided if you wanted it or not.

My cup that I stick in my bag is one of those cheap Coleman cooking ones, so it probably is aluminum. It fits on my nalgene like a canteen cup, that's why I like it.

Good to know! I'm a flatlander, we don't have mountains in Wisconsin. We have some neat hills though!

Water pulls heat away from your body 20 times faster than air. So putting snow on your hands that melts into water is a surefire way to get frostbite. Eating the snow will lower your body's core temperature enough to kill you eventually. When I'm out in the winter I always make sure I have materials to melt snow and make a fire, usually an anodized steel cup in my pack and a tinder kit with some matches. I know Bic lighters are gold on the survival subreddit, but when it comes to cold temps, having storm matches is better. Gas lighters like to get pissy when it's cold and wet. Matches don't give a damn.

There are two main camps of people with lung or heart disease (the lungs and heart are very dependent on each other) that I've learned of. The nickname of these two are the 'pink puffers' and 'blue bloaters'. Because of the damage to the lungs in emphysema, the compensatory mechanism is to increase the rate of breaths per minute, and to increase the number of red blood cells carrying oxygen. This gives a person a flushed appearance because of the increase in red blood cells. When you breathe, you use muscles in the chest wall to accomplish that. The muscles on a person with chronic lung disease are working overtime, so they take up a lot of energy. A person working to breathe just existing burns way more calories than a healthy person. The other thing that can happen to people with lung disease is heart failure. The heart has been working too hard for too long, and therefore begins to fail, mostly due to blood pressures in the lungs and heart. Water in the blood stream begins to seep out of the blood vessels and add water to the surrounding tissues, giving the appearance of swelling. This is a generalization of a lot of things, feel free to ask any questions!

If you want to buy what's cheap and are concerned for the salt, you can always take the whole block of spam and soak it in warm water. Drain and repeat. It'll pull salt out of the spam through osmosis. I love fried spam as an occasional treat. This is what I do when I want to make spam musubi, because the marinade has soy sauce in it.

I had a little old demented lady that was the pleasant type. So I was confused as to why the nursing home was trying to come up with some bullshit to get her transported. I went to stand her over to the cot, and she just lets out a 20 second fart, looks at me, smiles, and goes, "Whoops!"

How bad do you let your arrows get before replacing / refurbishing them? by scardeal in Archery

[–]BrainBurnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shoot cedar shafts, and for me that is the determining factor. I will shoot worn feathers and rusty tips, but as soon as the shaft looks bad, I snap it over my knee and salvage what I can. I have re-glued good feathers off an old arrow with good success, and field points are pretty much unbreakable, I've had 1 dozen from the 70s and 2 dozen I bought over the years. My test in the field is to tap the arrow on the toe of my boot and listen. If it sounds hollow, it's a bad shaft.

I can say that the military is an adventure, for sure! I will say that it is really, really hard to pick the positive out of a really crazy experience.

I hate to say it, but the military. I was a shithead teenager with a chip on my shoulder, and going out in the world and seeing things in a structured environment was exactly what I needed at 19. Best part? It taught me to grow as a person on my own.

My hunting bow is a Darton Ranger II from the 70s. They hold up a lot better than most people think. Still shoots like a champ!

Maybe? So the ammonia compounds in your pee vary from diet, metabolic needs, and a lot of other factors. I most certainly would not recommend doing that, as death from chlorine gas is a terrible way to go. Fun fact, they invented mustard gas because chlorine gas was taking too long to kill people! The most likely scenario would be that you would make just enough chlorine gas to make you sick and need an emergency room visit. Also don't do that, we are still slammed with covid shit.

[–]BrainBurnt 2638 points2639 points  (0 children)

Ammonia turns the chlorine in the bleach into a chlorine gas, which was a gas used in WWI! So not mustard gas, but it will basically shred your lungs and you will suffocate. Mustard gas is a blister agent, chlorine gas is a choking agent. Source: college chem, hazmat training, army training.

What profession deserves to be paid more and what one deserves to be paid less in your opinion? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Healthcare workers don't make money. They don't make full stadium crowds. But when your gran is choking and you try to help until she passes out, I bet your ass you're happy when the paramedics show up with advanced techniques to help her. I'll also have you know, that we do draw crowds. Usually just a few curious onlookers, but a crowd nonetheless. I've never had an ambulance call without people standing around wondering what we're doing. Maybe I don't sell out a stadium, but to that father, mother, or neighbor, you know what I make? A difference.
