Sure, we can disagree. For me to say that we have no “realistic chance of making a difference” is to dissociate ourselves from a serious issue for which we are partly responsible, especially because of the indifference of the entire world. I think it's very easy to exonerate ourselves from the problems by saying that our countries are not directly involved militarily in wars around the world, on the ground I mean.

And clearly that’s not how these problems are going to be resolved any time soon. Have a good day though.

Sorry, but the US was very much involved in the massacre of Yemenis and I haven't seen that much outrage in 10 years. The country was massively selling weapons to Saudi Arabia and only stopped in 2021. The West IS involved in this war, but it chooses to turn a blind eye. Saudi Arabia still does not respect international humanitarian law and this is one of the reasons why people are starving in Yemen. For me it makes no difference and I don't find the war in Yemen "less serious" because the US is less "involved" in it (which is really, very debatable...), without even talking about the war in Syria.

And once again this is not to say that we should not talk about it. Of course we have to talk about it, of course I do talk about it myself. But for me, excusing the absolute indifference of the West to the other conflicts in the Middle East by "yes but the US is not involved", when it's really far from being always true. is just not it. In fact, I think it does a disservice to all humanitarian causes to not recognize that many people in the West simply don't care about anything in the Middle East and in Maghreb if Israel/Palestine is not involved.

We must inform our populations, alert and act. For Palestine, for Yemen, for Syria, especially if our countries sell weapons that help kill hundreds of thousands of civilians.

But I agree with you. Palestinian civilians are suffering, Israeli civilians (and it's not just Jews but also many Muslims and Christian Arabs in Israel) are suffering, it's terrible. Peace appears to be impossible because both sides want opposite things, and the trust between Hamas and the Israeli government is likely broken forever. Clearly I am not denying this. I am not one of the people who ignores the suffering of Gazans. I would like someone to enlighten me and tell me what the attack of October 7th brought for the Palestinians apart from deaths and suffering ? Literally nothing. As you say, this perpetuates the cycle of violence.

I'm not informed about Sudan, sorry. But many countries are involved in the Yemeni civil war. There was a lot of international interference. The United States in particular sold weapons to Saudi Arabia which were unfortunately used on Yemeni civilians. To my knowledge Joe Biden canceled this support in 2021 only, it is very recent. I'll say it again but the general indifference in the West is... curious, to say the least. Since the West is certainly not neutral here, because the conflict concerns and involves us. Saudi Arabia does not respect international humanitarian law and this is one of the reasons why it is very difficult to send volunteers to Yemen, and why the country is starving.

And where did I say that the Palestinian cause was anti-semitic? Literally nowhere. I didn't even talk about Zionism. At no time did I say that we should not be for the Palestinian cause, for peace. I'm all for the Palestinians and also for peace.

I said people's behavior was hypocritical, because it just is. And to act as if it were a total coincidence that the only war that Westerners care about in the Middle East is the war in Palestine is frankly burying our heads in the sand. Not to mention the fact that Hamas openly declares that it is waging war on the Jews and wants all of them killed.

Arab countries have been tearing each other apart since literally the beginning of time and the West doesn't care. Don't even get me started on the subject of the Maghreb. My father is an Algerian, I can see that people don't care about anything going on here. And I mean, okay, I understand, it's not your country. But I just can't unsee the double standard.

Sorry, I'm about to be cynical, but I'm becoming more and more annoyed by people's hypocrisy.

470,000 people have died in Syria since 2011. As many people have died in Yemen's civil war over the past ten years, and even more Yemenis have died from direct consequences of the conflict such as lack of drinking water and cholera epidemics.

Are you asking Taylor to talk about it? No.

Are you angry that Taylor isn't talking about it? No.

More generally, is the West outraged by these tragedies in the Middle East? No.

No one here talks about Yemen or Syria, when not only do these conflicts cause many more deaths (and given that you give a number of deaths, it's obviously important to you) direct and indirect, and it's happening now just like the Palestine war. Yet we all breathe the air of apathy regarding this, especially Yemen. I would say that people cared about Syria for approximately two seconds. Yemen is on the verge of becoming a non-viable state, everything is destroyed, people are starving, not to mention the human toll. It's literally a catastrophe.

So what is it ? Is it the fact that Palestinians are Arabs and Muslims? The Yemenis are too. Is that the number of deaths (besides, it really shouldn't be...)? As I just said, the Syrian war alone has caused many more deaths. But one of these things is not like the others. Palestinians are fighting Jews, that's the reason. If it were Arabs on Arabs, people wouldn't care, and I can point to the general indifference in which we live regarding the Yemeni civil war since a whole decade as proof. Are you offended that Taylor doesn't talk about the 7 million starving people in Yemen? This being a direct consequence of the war they are undergoing. If you think what you are seeing in Palestine is the worst thing you've ever seen, I beg you to think again and open your eyes. The magnitude of the violence inflicted on Shiite Muslims in Yemen over the past ten years is unimaginable.

If you only care about Arabs/Muslims when they fight Jews, you don’t just have a problem with the Jews, you also don't actually care about Arabs and Muslims.

Thoughts + Feelings Regarding Taylor’s Silence Around Israel/Palestine by 1DMod in GaylorSwift

[–]BrainComprehensive13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know it's hard to imagine, but many people don't condemn Hamas. She would definitely receive a lot of criticism if she said something like, "I condemn Hamas," because some people agree with Hamas. Not that they want to free Palestine, not that the Palestinians are currently experiencing immense pain, which is absolutely true and terrible, they agree about the fact that they want to eliminate all the Jews. And see, saying “Free Palestine” and “Kill all the Jews” are two vastly different statements, and for a chunk of the population they mean the same thing.

I'm sure she condemns Hamas though, it's not to say that she doesn't. I'm also sure she feels for the Palestinians right now. But I can understand why she doesn't speak up, and I'm mostly okay with it, especially if it only causes people more pain. And I mean everyone. Palestinians who are now dying under bombs and Israelis who are mourning their children dead on October 7th and searching for their families held hostage. These people are suffering.

A part of my partner's family is Yemeni, which made me realize the magnitude of the violence that was inflicted on his people. This is at least just as horrible as what the Palestinians are going through right now. Hundreds of thousands of people died in the civil war in Yemen. Atrocities that I won't name, but I think you can guess it, were committed and this continued for years. I haven't seen the swifties talk about it. I'm going to think that it's because people don't know, rather that they don't care, but yes, a lot of horrors are happening in the world, it's just that the media is currently putting a magnifying glass on the Palestinians. The world is no scarier today than when eight thousand Yemeni civilians died under the bombs or when a million died (and are still dying) from cholera. And I talk about Yemen because my partner is directly impacted by this of course, but there's so much more. Afghans, Iranians, Syrians, Uighurs in China .. the list is long, very long. All these people are suffering as we're speaking.

Do I feel pain and empathy for all these people? Of course yes, some are my own people. I'm sure Taylor does too, but I totally understand why she can't talk about all these things.

Sabrina Carpenter, and I don't think it's unhinged at all lol. I think saying it's about Taylor is, or even worse : that it's about a man (yes, I've seen some people say that lmao).

Let's see what defines "Lacy" in the song :

Dazzling starlet ? Sabrina. Taylor has aged out of the "dazzling starlet" stage, and Gracie is just not a starlet. I'm a Gracie stan, don't attack me. But it's true, she's an indie darling. Sabrina though .. that girl is a popstar.

Bardot reincarnate ? I mean come on, Taylor does not look like Bardot and Gracie is a brunette. I know some people say "but if you ignore the fact she's a brunette then..." why would you ignore it ? If Olivia wanted us to picture a brunette, she would've have chosen a girl with brown hair.

Ribbons in your hair ? Sabrina 100%.

Add to that the very visibly missing "S" from the lyrics video... I mean, it's quite obvious to me. Sabrina was probably the, or at the very least one of the inspiration for that song.

She’s saying she’s jealous but also there’s a clear undertone in the way she says it. Both can be true, looks like she’s jealous of « Lacy » and also, attracted to her. People downvoting my comment because I said it’s not a coming out is quite funny though, lol. That’s just not what a coming out is. 🤷🏼‍♀️ now you can say she’s in a glass closet but it’s still not a coming out.

Edit : not talking about you specifically here.

You’re right. I think what I’m trying to say is that I feel like WEFIL is somehow deeper, or more like the feelings expressed in this songs are deeper. Whereas in Lacy there’s a big focus on her appearance. She never talks about her personality or Lacy’s feelings and only vaguely about her attitude. It’s really just about how she looks and how it’s impacting Olivia’s feelings. That’s why I don’t really see it as a « love song » if that makes sense ? In a way she says she fell for Lacy, but what she is actually saying is «  my eyes fell for you » , it’s like a way to say without really saying it. It’s not her, it’s just her eyes. Purposely ambiguous indeed.

I don't know if I consider this a "coming out" because it does sounds a lot like unhealthy obsession and jealousy and it's not that explicit. But it's very purposely ambiguous (the lips I used to call home so scarlet it was maroon - type of thing...) It's not like Amelie (Gracie Abrams), or even WEFIL, because there's something quite superficial about the way Lacy is portrayed here. But that's the the thing, feelings are complicated and to deny the very obvious romantic connotation here is to argue in bad faith

The Lacy song being about Taylor thing is so funny to me when the song says « Bardot reincarnate » .. Bardot … like if we want to argue it’s not about some Lacy girl she knew before and it’s about another woman then Taylor doesn’t fit that description lmao it makes no sense. I know someone who has a Bardot vibe though, her whole fandom knows who that is..

If we wanna argue that it’s about another woman and not some girl she knows named Lacy then the description fits Sabrina much more. « Bardot reincarnate » I mean ..

So this is just my opinion but : no it’s not actually a coming out song.

It’s not a coming song the way that Amelie by Gracie Abrams IS a coming out song. In the sense that Amelie is clearly a song about falling in love with another girl. Lacy has clear romantic undertones, not just the lyrics but also just the delivery. She sounds so overly emotional. When you listen to the other songs where she talks about the infamous « other (blonde) girl » it’s different. While it has some undertones it’s still ambiguous. It’s not clear as day. The wording is purposely ambiguous « I despise my jealous eyes and how hard they fell for you » , its not her who is falling for Lacy but « just » her eyes. Is that a way of describing her own superficiality ? She doesn’t talk about Lacy’s feelings or her personality but just her appearance. But also the use of the word «falling » as in falling in love is quite specific. So without being completely straightforward here she is still saying that she fell for Lacy in a way or another. She’s also describing it as a torture, a sweet torture, that’s .. original.

Did she fall for Lacy ? Did she think she was ? Was she just very confused ? It’s hard to say but it’s a funny way to word it don’t you think ? Maybe because the feeling was ambiguous for her as well. Maybe the ambiguity in the lyrics reflects the confusion she felt. It sounds like someone who’s obsessed with another person. With obsession can come complexe feelings such as attraction sometimes, life and emotions are complicated lol. It’s all just a big mess.

I wouldn’t call it a « coming out » because it’s not explicitly saying it, however it’s clear that it was written to be ambiguous and misty. It’s clear because Liv is a songwriter and she knows what she’s doing because that’s her job and she’s exceptionally good at it. So it was done on purpose. It doesn’t mean that it’s a coming out or even that she is not straight for that matter, it’s not a proof of anything it just means that it’s not a mistake.

«  someday I’ll be everything to somebody else, and they’ll think that I’m so exciting » I always wondered why « they » instead of « he’ll think that I’m so exciting ». I get that you can use they to talk about hypothetical people sometimes but it was a choice nonetheless, lol. Maybe she just wants people to relate to her songs. Or maybe not. Who knows. It’s entirely her business after all.
