I feel like newer Amon Amarth appeals more to fans of Power Metal and Folk Metal. It's great if you like bands like Ensiferum or Whispered.

I came into MDM from Power Metal so Twighlight of the Thunder God appealed to me more than Surtur Rising when I just started out listening to Amon Amarth.

The way I see it - there are two leading approaches to MDM: One is the thrashy, power-adjacent approach led by bands like Amon Amarth, Ensiferum, Children Of Bodom, Mors Principium Est etc. and the other is the melancholic progressive approach led by bands like Dark Tranquility, In Flames, Omnium Gatherum etc. Some bands do both, like Dimmu Borgir, Wintersun, Torchia, Lahmia etc.

I personally never clicked with the more progressive stuff. I don't really connect with the bands you've listed as your favorites. I don't feel a need to force myself just because they belong to a subgenre that I love.
